About

The Washington County Park Campground has one hundred and forty camper sites, fifteen tent sites, and seven shelter sites. Each camper site has a different capacity for any trailer, including pop-ups, travel trailers, fifth wheel units, and motor coaches. Each site comes with water, sewer, and electric services. There is a 120 volt hook up, 30 and 50 AMP. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the entire campground. Tent sites are located in grassy well-wooded areas; each site is private and close to bathrooms and other services. Men's and women's restrooms are spread throughout the campground with sinks and mirrors. Both camper and tent sites have a grill and grassy commons for guests to lay out chairs or additional camping equipment.

The seven shelter sites are located between the camper and tent sites and along the South Holston Lake Shore. The sites can accommodate eight to twelve people and can be rented out nightly for group meals, parties, and other gatherings. Two grills, garbage cans, and electric lighting come with the use of each shelter. A small booth is located at the property entrance where items such as ice, firewood, and propane are sold. A playground is located near the shelters for children to play on. Other exterior features at Washington County Park include an amphitheater and lakeside nature trail. Additionally, a swimming beach and two boat launches are located close to the campsites on the South Holston Lakeshore. Picnic tables, grassy commons, and grills are located all throughout the campground for visitors to play games, make food, and spend time together. Boat and watersport essentials are available for rent at the property office. Long-term reservations can be arranged along with overnight stays. The surrounding land is mostly government or privately owned. Further, into Abingdon, there are many historical sites.

Culture

Washington County Park is a large property intended to be used by families, couples, and single campers. Each site is placed strategically to provide privacy and views of the forested hillside and blue waters of South Holston Lake. The park is family-friendly, with pavilions available to rent for large gatherings, a playground for children to play on, and a sandy beach where visitors can swim in the cool lake water.

Those who manage the campground make it a priority to strive for a clean, well-managed, and safe environment for everyone. A quiet time from 10 PM to 8 AM has been put in place to provide uninterrupted sleep for visitors. A five-mile per speed limit while near the various units is strictly enforced throughout the park to ensure guest's safety.

South Holston Lake is one of Virginia's most significant reservoirs and is known for being one of the most picturesque lakes. The lake is surrounded by forestry on three sides, and the Washington County Park on one side. Those who spend time in the lake will often go paddle boarding, swimming, boating, and fishing. Most who visit Washington County Park will also spend time in Abingdon, a small nearby town. The town is in close proximity to South Holston Lake, South Holston Dam, and the Crystal Motor Speedway. Abingdon is one of Virginia's Historic Landmarks with the Fields-Penn House Museum and The Arts Depot.

History

The State of Tennessee originally owned the land where Washington County Park is located. The new owners purchased the property in the 1970s and started to develop the area. Since buying the property, everything has been updated, and many campsites have been added. The swimming beach was cleared, and the playground was incorporated into the property.
