Walnut Creek Resort

Walnut Creek Resort is a marina, cabin, and trailer resort that is located on the shore of Lake Texoma on the Texas - Oklahoma border in Gordonville, Texas. Besides the lake, the property is surrounded by wooded areas, along with grassy commons and a few creeks. The Skinner family purchased Walnut Creek Resort in 1980 and it remains still remains in their family to this day.

About

Walnut Creek Resort is family owned and operated. The property spreads across fifteen acres of Gordonville land and out into Lake Texoma. The property has nine cabins and twenty RV sites available to rent. Their other central amenity is the 170 boats covered boat slips available for all guests to use. Some guests will bring their boats and stay on the RV sites or in the cabins. Other guests will remain on their boats in the covered slips for convenience when heading out to fish in the early morning.

Each of the cabins at Walnut Creek Resort have a fully equipped kitchen with a refrigerator, stove, table, chairs, and a bathroom. The cabin is furnished with a television and cable. Each space is decorated with neutral, rustic themed decor. The property also includes inspired wildlife pieces. A picnic table, barbeque grill, and firepit are placed outside of each cabin. The living areas in each cabin have a love seat, couch, and small dining table. The single bedroom in each cabin varies in size. Each room has either a king-size bed, two twin beds, three queen beds, or four twin beds. One of the cabins is a duplex style. This allows for two families or groups to stay close together but in separate living spaces.

The duplex can be rented out separately or together. The cabins are all located on the north side of the property, just a minute's walk from the boat slip. A large pavilion is located in the southmost corner of the property. Here guests can grill and smoke meals. They can play games in the grassy commons or sit by the large fire pit. Public restrooms are spaced out across the property, one of which has showers. The resort has sixteen partial RV sites with 30A electric and water service and four full RV sites with 50 A electric and water service. Sewage services are also provided for RVs and boats.

The check-in office is located on the north side by the cabins and boat slip. Here they sell t-shirts, mugs, and hats. The fuel store on the dock sells fuel, tackle, snacks, sodas, oil, fishing bait, lifejackets, along with a variety of other fishing and watersport essentials. Kayak rentals are available to all guests at the Walnut Creek Resort. The property is surrounded on three sides by the lake, but a forested area and the highway are located to the west for easy travel. Walnut Creek Resort is open year-round, however from Memorial Day to Labor Day are the resort's busiest season. This is due to the abundant fishing in Lake Texoma. Visitors will spend the whole day out on the lake catching stripers, white bass, catfish, and more.

Culture

Walnut Creek Resort was created to be a comfortable space for families and small groups alike. The family-owned resort has been owned for years, and the Skinner's have created a place where fishermen can sleep comfortably and families and enjoy the quiet tranquility of the fishermen's town. Because the cabins and RV sites are spread apart, guests feel like they have privacy and solidarity in their spaces. The property strives to be a place that is safe, well kept, and although the cabins aren't very large, each one is cleaned regularly, and the linens and towels are picked up by office staff to be cleaned as well.

Some of the cabins were built by prisoners of war in the early 1900s others were built more recently. Guests appreciate the property's historical value. A number of positive reviews from previous visitors have been left. Most of them include the convenient marina, comfortable cabins, and the great fishing. One guest left this review on TripAdvisor, "This place has always been the quiet getaway from society and relax type of place. Our room was right on top of the hill overlooking the boat slip and lake. The slip was cheap and well worth the cost. The cabin had everything we needed for the weekend. Everything worked great, and we had a great time staying at this resort community where everyone was so kind and helpful."

Lake guide services are available through the resort, and they will pick up guests straight from the boat slip for a day of fishing. This is popular among amateur fishermen. Gordonville is a small fishing oriented town. There are few restaurants in the town and only one small grocery store. The town has a population of just over one thousand. Most visitors will drive ten minutes past Gordonville to Sadler, Texas, where there are many restaurants and stores.

History

This fifteen-acre property was established in 1950. Prisoners of war built the cabins that are available to rent. The Skinner family purchased the property in 1980. They added the RV sites and more cabins along with additional boat slips and the marina store when they first purchased the property. As time went on, they updated the sewage system and the fuel dock. Jennifer Skinner's daughter, who grew up on the Walnut Creek Resort, now runs the property. She was raised in the business and always wanted to be apart of it. The resort gets a wide variety of visitors, and she loves meeting new people and showing them around the property and the secrets of fishing on Lake Texoma.
