About

Located in Bayview, Idaho, is the Scenic Bay Resort. The resort is a marina on the Scenic Bay of Lake Pend Oreille. With docks, boat rentals, and a playground for kids, guests have a variety of options for recreation during their stay. The tent camping site for the resort is located at the lime kilns used when the area was used for lime mining.

The Scenic Bay resort is primarily a marina, though it has various options for lodging and camping. There are 20 different tent sites at the lime kilns that guests can choose from. The RV sites are split up into three different RV parks, the Creekside, Hillside, and Waterfront RV parks. In total, these three parks have 30 RV sites. The majority of the RV sites have 30-amp hookups, and five of them have 50-amp. Water, sewer, wifi, campfire rings, picnic tables, and bathrooms are also provided for the visitors of the RV parks.

The resort provides a motel with four rooms with a rear deck facing the waterfront, a kitchenette, cable television, and wifi. It also hosts a three-bedroom house that is rented out only for the short term called the Yellow House, as well as float homes available year-round for just one day or a whole month, and cabins equipped with a queen-size bed and a kitchenette. With most of these options, guests can choose to stay for either short term or long term.

Nearby the resort, there is a laundromat, stores, and more boat rentals for the guests to get what they need for their stay. The resort is five minutes away from Farragut State Park and 10 minutes from Silverwood Theme Park and Boulder Beach Water Park. These parks offer various extra recreational activities for visitors to participate in.

There are four nearby restaurants visitors of the resort can go eat at. These restaurants are the Lakehouse Bar and Grill, which is a full-service bar and restaurant, JD's Pub and Grill, which is also a full-service bar and restaurant, the Captain’s Wheel and Resort, and Ralph’s Coffee Shop. Lunch and dinner are served at the Lakehouse Bar and Grill, JD's Pub and Grill, and the Captain’s Wheel and Resort, while breakfast is served at Ralph’s Coffee Shop, which stays open until 3 PM.

Culture

At the Scenic Bay Resort, the owners hope guests will feel relaxed, enjoy their stay, and have family time. The employees are there from 9 AM to 6 PM every day of the week to try and help guests with whatever they may need. Generally, management aims to provide guests with privacy, opting for patron interaction only in situations where it is requested.

Policies for the resort include no smoking inside, quiet time from 10 PM to 7 AM, and the inclusion of pets in certain rooms as long as they are under 20 pounds, leashed, and any mess generated by them is cleaned by whoever brought them. Guests need to report their pets at check-in and also declare their vehicle to be able to park at the resort.

During the month of July, the Scenic Bay Resort helps with some events in Bayview. During the Fourth of July, they host vendors for the Bayview Days celebration, where there is a street fair, a parade, fireworks, and vendors. Later in July, the resort hosts a car show in their parking lots. June, July, and August are the busiest months for the property, though it is open year-round. In the winter, the water for the RV sites is normally turned off, with the only exception being if someone reserves a site. As such, any visitor who uses an RV unit during the winter is expected to turn it off at the end of their stay.

Most of the property's reviews emphasize the experiences that patrons had, as well as the views that are offered from the premises. One guest wrote, “Great spot in Bayview. You can have a boat moored here. It’s clean and has well-kept docks. The staff is friendly and helpful.” The guests who stay at the resort are a mix of families and older couples, with the majority of adult guests being between 30 years old and 52 years old. Many patrons are repeat guests. They often stay at the resort to go to the nearby state and theme parks. They also will often visit Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, as Bayview is in the middle of those two cities.

History

The current owners of the Scenic Bay Resort are Chan and Teresa Karupiah. They have owned it for 30 years and live on the property. Before buying the resort, Chan and Teresa were both engineers at Boeing and while on vacation one day, stumbled across Bayview and the marina. When they saw the marina was for sale, they bought it. For the first few years of owning the marina, they still worked for Boeing in Seattle and went back and forth between Bayview and Seattle.

Since buying the property, they’ve remodeled the buildings and updated the power in the RV sites. They’ve also plumbed in the utilities for the RV Park. All these changes were made to help the guests have a more comfortable stay during their time at the resort.

Before Chan and Teresa owned the property, there were multiple different owners. Jim and Mary Seeley were the original owners of the property. Before the town became what it is today, it used to be a railroad town that mined lime. The prior mining in Bayview is the reason for the limekilns at the tent camping sites.
