Reel Livin' Resort is an RV park that sits right on the southern banks of the Lost Land Lake in Hayward, Wisconsin. A bar-and-grill style restaurant by the same name—Reel Livin'—is one of the most popular features of the property, bringing in guests from the lake or as they pass by on the road.
The entirety of the state of Wisconsin is known for its various lakes and fishing opportunities. To capitalize on that fact, Reel Livin' Resort's name reflects the popularity of fishing as a hobby in the area, referencing the "reeling in" of a fish. Reel Livin' is an RV park/campground on the southern banks of Lost Land Lake in Hayward, Wisconsin. The lake is one of many in the region, though Reel Livin' is one of the only RV parks in the nearby vicinity. The property is made up of 37 sites, broken down into 7 cabins and 30 RV sites. Some of the sites are seasonal. Reel Livin's standard months of operation are from May to October of each year. However, they are technically open in winter months as well. There are only a few cabins available for rent for those seeking snow activities in Hayward during those times. The majority of the sites at Reel Livin' come equipped with all of the standard RV hookups such as electric, water, and sewage. All sites come with picnic tables and fire pits, in addition to a fair amount of seclusion due to the forested area in which the campground sits. The entire property is surrounded by trees, and many guests have expressed their enjoyment of the lake's views. The most distinct feature of Reel Livin' is the bar-and-grill restaurant that they have on-site with the same name as the campground. Anyone on the lake is free to dock at Reel Livin' and grab a bite to eat. They serve burgers, pizza, and a wide variety of alcoholic beverages. It should be noted that the bar on-site is open year-round. In addition to its restaurant, Reel Livin' Resort sells a few essential camping supplies such as firewood and ice for the guests' convenience. Hayward as a town is fairly tourist-driven, at least relatively more so when in comparison with other towns in Wisconsin. People from various parts of the world participate in the extensive range of festivals and activities that the city puts on annually. There is also an impressive assortment of outdoor attractions and things to do nearby, such as fishing, swimming, boating, kayaking, hiking, biking, skiing, and snowmobiling.
The culture of Reel Livin' Resort is that of family-friendliness and outdoor experience. It is designed so that people are free to make the memories that they choose for themselves. Guests are free to socialize with other people in the campground at their own convenience. However, if they should decide to be more reclusive, the positioning of the trees creates a natural spacing that makes it possible to do so. The owners of Reel Livin' are Matt & Jane Pfleger, and they strive to make the overall experience at their campground one of relaxation and fun. They are willing to help guests should a problem arise, though they also "try not to infringe on people's privacy." The on-site bar is another cultural element of Reel Livin'. Even people who aren't staying in the RV park frequently come for the light-hearted atmosphere and the wide assortment of bar food. Fishing stories are commonly swapped, and often friends are made. The area is equally famous when it comes to outdoor activities. There are various festivals and competitions held throughout the year. "There's always something going on," says Matt. In February of each year, an international skiing event is held. People come from all over the world for this cross-country skiing race. There is also a lumberjack festival for local and visiting loggers to test their skills. With the many lakes present in northern Wisconsin, there are frequent fishing tournaments held nearby. If guests have any desire to prove themselves in a contest of some sort, they're likely to find it in the region.
Reel Livin' Resort has been around for nearly 100 years. It was opened in the 1930s under the name "Newmire Resort." Later it was purchased in the 1950s, and the new buyer decided to change the name to Reel Livin'. From then on, the name of the property never took any other changes, though the ownership of the campground was altered many times. It was sold again in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Management of the property was taken over by Matt & Jane Pfleger in 2013. Matt was seeking an activity or hobby to do as he entered his retirement. He decided that managing an RV park was something that interested him, so he bought Reel Livin' and is the current owner of the property.
