Point A Lake RV Park

Situated in Alabama's southern region, Point A Lake RV Park has been operating as a campground since the 1960s. Currently, the property offers 28 sites for guests to reserve. One of the RV park's most unique features is its proximity to the lake, where a number of visitors go fishing. The area that encompasses the campground is fairly abundant in outdoor recreational activities as it features a national forest within ten miles of the property, as well as a place to hunt for shark teeth. The majority of those who stay at Point A Lake RV Park are families and some couples who are presumably "coming to get away for the quietness," according to the county administrator. Rural land surrounds the acreage, which tends to appeal to those who are looking to stay somewhere generally secluded from the more urban cities.

About

Point A Lake RV Park occupies an expanse of land in southern Alabama. The property offers a total of 28 RV sites, 12 of which are full hookups with the inclusion of a septic tank. The other 16 do not contain a septic tank; however, they offer water, cable, and electricity services. All of the reservable spaces have cement tables, with the exception of three which are wooden. All sites have fire pits available as well. Apart from their physical amenities, the 28 sites can also be classified by their proximity to the lake. A number of lakeside sites can be found adjacent to the lake, as Point A Lake RV Park is named after the lake that it sits on. The remaining spaces are called "off-water sites" with a similar rationale.

Furthermore, an air-conditioned main office building can be found on-site, in addition to showers, two washing machines, and two dryers, all available for guest use. Paved roads wind throughout the RV park surrounded by several trees that provide shade.

Terri Cork, the camp host, comments that fishing tends to be a notable draw for those who take interest in exploring the lake next to the campground. A dock that extends out into the lake can be found in the RV park and is open for guests to stroll around. Some visitors to the area have brought personal pontoon boats to utilize during their stay. According to Terri, the lake extends nearly 700 acres. She further explains that one side of the lake is characterized by a dam that feeds water into the lake, while the other side of the lake functions as an outlet to feed the water out. A swim area with pavilions, a playground, and beaches are featured on the lake, which guests can visit at their leisure. In addition to the lake, a national forest can be found about ten miles down the road from the property, as reported by Terri. Candyland in Andalusia, the Hank Williams Museum, and the Train Museum are three specific attractions that Terri directs her patrons to, as well as shark tooth hunting, which is within five miles of the property. As for restaurants, she recommends David's Catfish, Big Mike's, and Hilltop.

Culture

One of the camp hosts, Terri Cork, remarks that "people come to relax and to not be around a lot of noise." Due to this, large events are not held at Point A Lake RV Park. Terri tries to let her patrons know that "if they need anything, then we're there to help."

"My job as a host is to make their experience the best," she says, "and to walk them through their experience if they're new." Terri and her co-hosts put forth the effort to interact with visitors often; however, she explains that "we don't want to frequently intrude on their time" at the RV park. Once or twice each week, Terri and Kevin try to visit with the occupants of every site. One particular guest commented on the hospitality they received from the camp hosts, saying, "The hosts are amazing. The campground is perfect for a vacation in the woods overlooking the water. There are a couple of trails to walk through the woods, and there is a stream with a cute beaver dam along one of the trails. Everyone visiting the campground is super friendly too."

A few notable policies are in place at the property, most of which are regarding pets. As Point A Lake RV Park is pet-friendly, visitors are required to take responsibility for their dogs by cleaning up after them. Dogs must be attended to at all times throughout the pet owner's stay, and it should be noted that dogs must be under 65 pounds to stay at the campground. Excessive barking is not acceptable, and a limit of two dogs is permitted per site. With regard to site guidelines, Terri wants guests to adhere to the phrase, "Always keep your spot cleaner than you left it." As for quiet hours, typically from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM, guests are expected to keep noise to a minimum with respect to other campers.

Point A Lake RV Park is open year-round, with the busiest days being Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Families constitute the general demographic of those who visit the campground, especially during the summer. In the winter, the RV park receives a considerable number of snowbirds, or as Terri calls them, "snow bunnies." In October, they tend to receive groups who come to stay for shark tooth hunting.

History

Camp host, Terri, reports that Point A Lake RV Park has been a campground since the 1960s. She says that the property had formerly been a "NASCAR wannabe area;" however, the campground and its surroundings have become much quieter compared to those times. Terri was led into the lodging industry when she retired early from her job as a teacher, of 33 years, due to a sickness that her husband developed, but Terri has camped with her family often since she was a little girl. The couple purchased a unit at the campground in 2018, as they planned to stay long-term for about three to six months. Since then, they have not relinquished their residence at the campground.

When the county took over the campground in 2019, the property underwent a few upgrades. There were improvements to the Wi-Fi, burning pits were added, and a fair amount of standard maintenance had been done, with the help of the Covington County Commissioner, Greg White, and Covington County Commissioner Administrator, Karen Sowell.
