Pine Valley Lodge

Pine Valley Lodge is a western country-style property with four lodges on the premises. The establishment is open year-round and does not exclude any particular ages of visitors. Some of the rooms include furniture that is original to when the lodges were first built. Breakfast is provided for guests every morning. During the summer, Pine Valley Lodge tends to get busier as the property is in close proximity to several outdoor recreational attractions such as Hells Canyon and the Eagle Cap Wilderness. Patrons have the opportunity to participate in activities without having to leave the grounds. The owners provide games and things to do for guests in an attempt to make their stay more accommodating.

About

Pine Valley lodge features four separate lodges with a total of fourteen available rooms. Each of the rooms accommodates differently, for example, some of the rooms have one bed while others have two. The owner considers the units to be "specific to visitors' needs." A private bathroom can be found in each of the lodges. The outside area of the establishment contains two covered patios, which each has lighting, tables, and a BBQ. Common areas are available on the porches for guests to socialize and lounge, as well as a gazebo. Rocking chairs and hammocks are provided on the outside of the grounds. The property itself is relatively shaded with about three or four apple trees. Pine Valley Lodge is located downtown on the main street.

Two of the lodges include kitchenettes and the other two have full kitchens. The rooms without kitchenettes have access to the main lodge's kitchen and microwave at all times. Soaps and shampoos are provided in every unit. The suites have televisions in them, though the main lodge TV room is open to everyone, providing channels from DirecTV. Many on-site activities are available for visitors such as football, soccer, board games, and card games.

A deluxe continental breakfast is served every morning in the Lodge. The majority of food that is provided are hot foods such as eggs and sausage. Some other options include scrambled eggs, waffles, toast, granola, cereal, yogurt, peaches, pears, and other fruits. On busier days, they offer biscuits and gravy. Breakfast is served from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM though the owner mentions they are "flexible" and can change the times if necessary. The owners accommodate dietary restrictions such as gluten-free.

The owner remarks that Pine Valley Lodge is mostly known for its unique rooms that have their own "personalities" and the fact that they're so different from each other. Some of the rooms are given their names based on certain features in the rooms, for instance, the Blue Heron includes blue herons carved into the handmade headboard of the bed.

Culture

The owners consider themselves to be "people-oriented people" and they try to interact with their guests as much as possible. They make it their goal to help their patrons feel "like they're at home" and comfortable. In an attempt to achieve this goal, they provide common areas for the purpose of encouraging guests to interact with one another. The owner mentions that in the past they've had their TV room full of people who had fun together. Developing a "homey" atmosphere is what the owner strives to create for the overall experience for visitors. One previous guest remarked, "The elevated walks and naturalistic gardens were great. Breakfast was hearty and there was plenty for our big crew. The staff was very friendly and eager to help."

Pine Valley Lodge is open year-round. A fair amount of repeat guests have come to the property and the owner mentions that some visitors have been coming for over ten years. Word-of-mouth is the property's biggest advertising method and aids to the success of the property, according to the owner. Typically from June to September is the busiest time for Pine Valley Lodge as the weather is relatively warmer. January and February also get busy as people come to go snowmobiling and participate in other winter activities.

The property receives a variety of people from younger individuals coming for outdoor recreation to retired couples visiting the area. The majority of patrons tend to be around thirty to fifty years old. Though Pine Valley Lodge receives many adults, the property does not discourage families or young children from staying at the lodges. The owner mentions that they don't prefer to cater to a specific group. Many motorcycling roads can be found by Pine Valley Lodge, which tends to draw motorcyclists to the property as well.

Family reunions and other similar events can be hosted on the premises. Some local events in the area can be available to guests during their stay. Pine Fest was voted Oregon's best small music festival the second year it was hosted. Additionally, many guided bicycle tours come through and visitors can participate in them. One particular attraction that typically draws in a number of visitors is llama packing at the Eagle Cap Wilderness. The owner mentions that Hells Canyon is a popular tourist draw and they recommend it to those who are staying with them. Snake River is another attraction in close proximity to the lodges that a fair amount of visitors come for.

Pets are allowed in two different buildings on the premises: the Main Street Shack and the Blue Dog. Smoking is prohibited inside but there are places outside where people can smoke at their leisure. Though there isn't a designated quiet hour, the owners ask that guests are courteous because the lodges are relatively older and therefore sound can transfer much easier.

History

The area of Pine Valley has a considerable amount of history in relation to mining. In Cornucopia, located in the Granite Mountains, one of the biggest "gold finds" existed. In 1861, after the major gold rush of Baker County, a rush of prospectors came to Cornucopia for the gold.
Pine Valley Lodge was originally established by two local artists. Much of the furniture that is currently occupying the lodges were made by these artists. In 1995, they began remodeling the property. The new owners eventually took over in 2001, though it has been a bed and breakfast for almost as long as it has existed. At one point the property was a gourmet restaurant before it was sold, but when those owners retired, the restaurant discontinued.

One of the lodges known as The Blue Dog used to be the rectory for a church across the street and the rest of the lodges were private residences. When a nearby mine was shut down in the 1940s, the main building on the property was reconstructed to what it currently is now. The original owners of Pine Valley Lodge were German and because of this, the suites used to have a European style. The style of the suites has changed since then, but overall each room has stayed relatively the same from when they were first built.
