About

Nearby Point Reyes National Seashore sits the Olema Campground, located in Olema, California. The property has 184 different sites for guests including back-in RV sites and tent camping spaces. About 104 of the sites are reserved for patrons looking to tent camp, and the other 80 are RV sites. The hookups for the RV spaces include water and power. Some sites additionally have hookups of septic available. The sites that do not have septic hookups have the opportunity for a honey wagon service to come and pump out the tanks, for an additional service fee. Each space, regardless of whether it is for tent camping or RV parking, comes equipped with a fire pit and a picnic table that guests can use at their leisure.

On the grounds of the establishment, there are a variety of activities that visitors can participate in. For groups of four or more sites reserved under the same name, there is a clubhouse available for reservation. The clubhouse has two living room areas and a relatively spacious outdoor backyard area, as well as a full kitchen that contains a large commercial sink and top-burning stove. Additionally, at the campgrounds are horseshoe pits, shuffleboard courts, and a volleyball net that can be rented. There is also a playground near the camping sites which can be enjoyed by families who come to visit the area and stay at the campgrounds. Grass and trees can be found on the property, as the area between each site is grassy and there is an assortment of trees on the grounds.

Inside the main office building, there is a relatively small store where guests can purchase nonperishable items. The store sells camping necessities such as RV toilet paper, and hookup equipment. Other items that can be found at the store are personal care items such as body wash, toothpaste, shampoo, and conditioner. Small food items such as chips, candy, and soda are also available. The store is located in the main office building which is next to the clubhouse building and the post office that is on-site. It should also be noted that an on-site laundry mat is open for everyone twenty-four hours daily.

Culture

The owner and staff of Olema Campground hope that those who stay at the property are able to have a positive experience with their families. In an effort to provide guests with an atmosphere conducive to families, there are policies in place that patrons are expected to adhere to. After 10:00 PM the manager asks that visitors are quiet. They may still be out and in their individual campsites with fire, but there is no loud music or other activities allowed after that time. Additionally, pets are allowed on the grounds but they must be kept on a leash at all times. There are no restrictions on breeds, but the owners ask that all dogs are friendly towards staff, other dogs, and children. In an effort to allow children to play around the park, a speed limit of five miles per hour is enforced on the grounds as well.

While staying at the campground, the owner hopes that visitors can feel comfortable, welcomed, and at home. The assistant manager said she hopes that guests "don't have to feel worried about anything," during their visit. In an effort to provide patrons with the opportunity to experience the calm that is said to be on the property, there is a nightly security guard on the grounds. Additionally, during the summer months, there are various bands and people who come to perform their music at the establishment. On Fridays and Saturdays during the summer months, the staff at the business will do storytelling for kids in the same area where the musicians play. The staff also strives to have frequent interaction with guests with the hopes of being available if patrons have any questions or need help. The maintenance staff is available during the day for basic tasks of assisting people with their hookups or helping them back into their sites. The campground is open year-round; however, some sites close for the winter season. The busiest time of the year, according to the manager, is from April to late November.

Those who stay at Olema Campground comment on the hospitality of the staff and management at the establishment. One guest said, "There is a large field that is perfect for stargazing and is easy on the eyes. It is close to Point Reyes Visitor Station and you can even walk to some of the trailheads from the campground. All the staff is generally friendly and in good spirits." Others mention the wildlife in the area and the scenery at the campground. While staying at the campground, visitors may have the opportunity to see various types of wildlife and animals native to the region. Some animals that have been seen by guests in the past include deer, raccoons, turtles, and birds. "Nicely situated on the edge of Point Reyes National Seashore, the wildlife surrounds the campground and they've done a great job with the layout," said a patron.

Nearby Olema Campground is a variety of activities and sites that guests can visit. There are multiple hiking trails in close proximity to the property that patrons can enjoy. Additionally, the manager reports that many who come to the campground visit Point Reyes Lighthouse, which is approximately 40 minutes from the campground. Near the lighthouse is an Elk Reserve that patrons can go to. At Point Reyes National Seashore, visitors can see elephant seals from the months of December to March. During this time, the elephant seals come to the beach to mate and raise their young before going back out to the ocean. There are multiple places where those looking to experience the elephant seals can watch them. Some restaurants in the area that the manager would recommend to those staying at the campground include Cafe Reyes and the Side Street Kitchen.

History

Prior to becoming a campground, the property was utilized as an artichoke farm, according to Gabi, the general manager. After being used for such purposes for some time, in the late 1960s, ownership of the establishment was given to "an unknown buyer who presumably converted the property into a campground," as stated by Gabi.
The current owner has operated the Olema Campground for the entirety of its life as a campground. He purchased the land in 1969, along with a few others, and the property was then converted into a campground. The layout and general features of the premises are the same as when the establishment was first erected in 1969; however, there have been updates made over the years for cosmetic reasons as well as functionality and repairs. In the future, the owner and the staff of the Olema Campground plan on continuing to do updates as necessary and keep the business in good working order.
