Mountain Rest Cabins

Mountain Rest Cabins has been owned and operated by June White since October 2007. Currently, the property offers a total of 28 accommodations for visitors to reserve. Aside from the sites, guests also have access to a laundry facility, a covered pavilion with picnic tables, and a main office building with a gift shop. A considerable extent of the premises is wooded, and the land that encompasses the establishment is mountainous. According to June, outdoor recreation is a popular draw for tourism in the area due to its environment, as several waterfalls can be found near the campground. Fishing, white water rafting, and mountain biking are a few of the most common recreational activities that people undertake during their stay at Mountain Rest Cabins.

About

Located in the northwestern region of South Carolina, Mountain Rest Cabins occupies 20 acres of land along Jerry Creek. The accommodations that are offered at the establishment are categorized into six different types of units, which are as follows: three chalets, six cottages, two studios, three glamping cabins, five RV sites, and nine tent sites. Visitors can check in at the property's main office building where the owner, June White, resides. This same building additionally contains a gift shop that sells apparel, birthday/anniversary cards, jewelry, bowls, plates, candles, laundry detergent, and a variety of camping supplies. Directly outside the front of the main building is a front porch area with chairs that visitors can lounge on. Moreover, a laundry facility is stationed on the premises and is available to patrons of the campground over the course of their stay.

Amenities found on the interior and exterior of the glamping cabins vary, however, they are all equipped with a deck, fire pits, grills, picnic tables, and TVs. Concrete driveways facilitate access to every chalet. The Cherokee Pride is the largest of the three cabins, as it contains two bathrooms, a game room, four bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen area. A total of 10 occupants can be accommodated in The Cherokee Pride cabin. As for Hilltop View, there are two bedrooms upstairs and one bedroom downstairs. The master bedroom of Hilltop View includes a king-sized bed, while the other rooms have queen-size beds. The other cabin, MiMi's Hideaway, has a living room area with an adjoining kitchen space. June, the owner, comments that MiMi's Hideaway has a fairly large bathroom.

The glamping cabins offer amenities that are somewhat similar to the cottages, though each cottage also provides fire pits, picnic tables, grills, and bathrooms. All of the cabins are one story high with one bathroom and a kitchen. Two of the cottages—Black Bear Landing and Dragon's Den—are ADA-accessible units with a ramp that extends from the front doors. Black Bear Landing includes a walk-in shower and can accommodate a maximum of four occupants. With regard to the services provided at the RV sites, the majority provide water and electrical hookups. One RV site offers 50-amp electricity, while another offers 30-amp. Those who are staying in the tent and RV sites can use the on-site bathhouse during their stay.

In addition to the trees and wooded areas that characterize the grounds of Mountain Rest Cabins, a covered pavilion can also be found on the premises. This pavilion is equipped with grills and picnic tables for guest use. According to June, the most unique feature of the acreage is the RC racing track. Apart from the on-site activities, Mountain Rest Cabins is also located among a diverse range of outdoor recreational activities, with one of the more popular pastimes being trout fishing. Another activity that has drawn a number of visitors to the area is white water rafting. Some people also take an interest in visiting the nearby waterfalls that can be found about two miles away from the property. Concerning dining options in the vicinity, June often recommends Puerto Nuevo to her guests and the Mountain Rest Café, which is about a mile away from the property and is open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays for lunch and dinner.

Culture

June White, the owner of Mountain Rest Cabins, strives to help her guests feel comfortable throughout the duration of their stay. With this goal in mind, June makes an effort to prepare each visitor's accommodation before their arrival by turning the heat on in the cabins if the weather is cold and making their beds. She also checks to see if the units are stocked with the proper amenities, namely trash liners, towels, coffee filters, and cleaning products, among other items. An individual who previously stayed at Mountain Rest Cabins commented, "The bathroom was clean and well-stocked with towels and washcloths. The interior decorations of the ocean and palm tree scenes were a nice touch. The cabin was quaint with rustic character, with beautiful forestry views from all windows." Furthermore, June enjoys informing guests about the location by providing maps and brochures of the area. These maps indicate "over 140 waterfalls within a 50-mile radius of the campground," according to June.

Mountain Rest Cabins' website states, "Your family's safety is our number one concern." June expresses this as she notes, "I want occupants to understand that they are in the woods," and as such, potentially dangerous wildlife may be roaming the area. For the safety of her patrons, June tries to encourage guests to be aware of these animals. In addition to this, a few policies are implemented at the establishment that intend to enhance visitors' experience at Mountain Rest Cabins. The entire campground is pet-friendly; however, out of concern for future occupants who may have cat/dog allergies, June suggests that pet owners remove any bedding or rugs and replace it with their own bedding, as there is an hourly fee of $15.00 to remove pet hair from linen, bedding, rugs, and furniture. Patrons should also be aware that a $35.00 fee is required to bring their pets. June emphasizes that any dogs with aggressive behavior must leave the premises. Beyond the guidelines that pertain to pets, Mountain Rest Cabins also enforces a quiet time that begins at 10:30 p.m. each night.

The establishment is open year-round for visitors to reserve their accommodations. From April to November, Mountain Rest Cabins experiences its busiest season of operation. June says they often receive motorcycle groups who rent the entire property. Many of those who stay at the business are also in the area for their occupation. Events are occasionally held at Mountain Rest Cabins; June recalls an event that was held in the past when she hired musicians to come during the occurrence of an eclipse. Local bands are also invited to the campground to perform on occasion.

History

Mountain Rest Cabins was originally named The Covered Wagon. June White, the current proprietor, explains that what is now a fully operational lodging business first began as a wooded site where a sawmill was set up to build the cabins that visitors can presently reserve. Before June acquired the acreage, the establishment was under the ownership of the Casali family since 1992. The family changed the name from The Covered Wagon to The Queen Ridge Subdivision. In October of 2007, June White, a former sales representative, purchased the campground. Prior to becoming the camp host, June's previous occupation entailed extensive traveling, and she says that she would often come to the general location where Mountain Rest Cabins is established. Since the time she first entered the lodging industry, June has come to find that her favorite part of her job as the owner is meeting and interacting with "the people." She also notes that she enjoys "the peaceful and quiet" atmosphere at night.

June White runs the campground with the assistance of her son, his wife, and other family members. "We've all put a lot [of work] into the property," June remarks. Concerning future plans for Mountain Rest Cabins, June and her son are hoping to add disc golf as another on-site activity for their guests. June is also considering utilizing the property's creek by making it a "lazy river."
