Lopez Farm Cottages & Tent Camping

Lopez Farm Cottages and Tent Camping has a total of 22 sites, with most of them being walk-in tent sites, along with a few cottages, glamping sites, and drive-in sites, and is located in Lopez Island, Washington. Lopez Island is primarily an agricultural-based island with many different pastures and forests in the area. There are also a number of state parks on the island, such as Spencer Spit State Park and Blackie Brady County Park. Due to the location of the land, and the lack of bridges and highways that lead off the island, ferry travel is a prevalent form of travel between the other nearby islands. On the islands, guests can enjoy activities like wine tasting at one of the local wineries, bike riding, and seasonal whale watching.

About

Lopez Farm Cottages and Tent Camping have 22 available sites in total that sit on 27 acres of land. There are 12 walk-in tent sites, five cottages, three drive-in spaces, and two glamping locations in which guests can choose to stay. Anyone who stays in the cottages will have access to the jacuzzi that is built on the outside, right next to the cottages. Amenities that the campgrounds offer to everyone that stays on one of their sites include flushing toilets, hot showers, Wi-Fi, outdoor kitchens, and fireplaces.

Each site is separated from the other living locations by swathes of trees and shrubbery, which helps guests find a sense of seclusion and privacy. Every tent site has an area that is level for putting up a tent and also comes with a hammock, two wooden chairs, and a small wooden table. The glamping locations are equipped with a cooler, pantry box, chairs, a table, and a hammock. The cottages have a country-style continental breakfast delivered to the front porch for the following day, as not to disturb the guests so early the next day. Each of the cottages sports a bathroom, queen-sized bed, fireplace, and a kitchen with a microwave, sink, and refrigerator.

Beyond the property line, there are a number of activities that guests can participate in, such as taking the ferry to other nearby islands, fishing off of a pier or taking a boat out into the bay and casting a line, and visiting one of the local wineries. There are a few state parks on Lopez Island that guests can see if they'd like. The two closest parks to Lopez Farm Cottages and Tent Camping are Spencer Spit State Park and Odlin County Park. For those who want to explore the surrounding waters, there is a company called Outer Island Excursions that takes visitors out on the ocean to go on a three-hour whale watching trip.

Culture

The owners of Lopez Farm Cottages and Tent Camping say they strive to create a peaceful environment that guests can relax and enjoy. To do this, they have several rules and conditions in place, such as no youth under the age of fourteen are allowed to stay on the property. Another one is that open wood-fueled fires are not permitted on any of the campsites or cottages, but they are currently allowing guests to bring their own portable propane fire pit, as long as there isn't a burn ban that is actively being enforced. They say their intent behind this is to cater to couples who are looking for a quiet environment. In fact, the typical demographic of guests that visit the campsite tend to be couples and retired folk.

The owner, whose name is Cathie Mehler, states, "our goal is to have guests feel rejuvenated after a nice get-away from the city when they stay here at Lopez Farm." Lopez Farm Cottages and Tent Camping has received a number of reviews from guests who have stayed in the past. One such review reads, "Very clean campsite and facility, I stayed in site #11. Campsite area has its own bathroom; quite new with flush toilet and shower. Communal campfire location, with covered kitchen area having microwave, coffee pot and BBQ."

There is a recommendation that guests who plan on staying at one of the sites should remember to bring their own flashlight or lantern, coffee mug, charcoal, and a towel. The surrounding area offers a number of more relaxed activities, which adds to the environment that Lopez Farm Cottages and Tent Camping tries to create. There are a number of more leisurely activities on the island like whale-watching, bike-friendly roads and trails, ferry rides, and exploring the agricultural lands that grow vegetables and raise livestock, like sheep and cattle.

History

Lopez Farm Cottages and Tent Camping was founded about 28 years ago, back in 1993, after the Warsen family purchased the land. Before the campgrounds were established, the land was used agriculturally to farm. On the property, a 1907 Craftsman-style farmhouse is present, in which the family that owns Lopez Farm Cottages and Tent Camping resides. The current owners of the property are John Warsen and Cathie Mehler, and they manage and operate the land themselves. When the family bought the grounds, the surrounding acres were then built into tent sites and cottages. The Warsen family purchased the property with the intent to run it when they retired, and they have and continue to do so to this day.
