Lone Mountain River Front Campground

Lone Mountain River Front Campground is an 80-acre campsite that can be found in Andover, Maine, near the Ellis River. On the 80-acres of land, one can find over 40 camping sites, with 14 of them being RV sites and the rest being tent sites that are open from the springtime to the fall. Lone Mountain River Front Campground is pet-friendly and allows horses on the property, which guests can take on some of the trails if they would like. There are a number of trails in the area, with one of the more popular ones being The Appalachian Trail, which is known as the "longest hiking-only trail in the world," according to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.

About

Lone Mountain River Front Campground rests on about 80-acres of land, with a total of 42 sites that available during the spring, summer, and fall, specifically opening in May and closing its doors in October. The campground has 14 RV sites with full hook-ups, including water, electrical, and sewage stations, and has 26 tent slots and two glamping spaces. Each campsite comes with a picnic table and a fire pit.

Also on the property, guests can find a store that sells a number of things, such as snacks, drinks, ice, and firewood. Next to most of the campsites are the newly renovated bathhouse and showers with hot water. One can also find an activity area that hosts a number of courts and equipment for things like horseshoes, tetherball, and a swing set.

Due to the many acres on the land and all of the trails that allow for horseback riding, Lone Mountain River Front Campground has a large field that has the ability to hold horses so guests can camp with their horses close by and in an open space, so they don't have to stay in a cramped place while visiting. Equestrian and ATV trails can be found in the area, as well as a river that runs through the land. The river opens up the possibilities for visitors, allowing them to enjoy a number of water sports if they would like. Several of these activities that are available are paddle boarding, kayaking, and swimming.

A twenty-minute drive to the south from Andover sits the town of Bethel. Bethel is a much larger city than Andover and offers several museums and ski resorts, as well as a few more restaurants that Andover doesn't have for travelers to experience. One prominent place that is known among locals for its selection of winter sports during the winter and biking trails during the summer is Sunday River Resort. While Lone Mountain River Front Campground is only open from May to October, the owner has mentioned that they do want to be open year-round sometime in the future.

Culture

Lone Mountain River Front Campground is a "place you would come to enjoy the outdoors," as stated by part-owner Corie Learned. Due to the property being surrounded by nature, the owner says that Lone Mountain River Front Campground strives to create an atmosphere that brings comfort and enjoyability while still maintaining an outdoorsy experience. Guests that have been to the property comment on the high amount of exploration that they can encounter in the area.

Andover has many different trails for hiking and ATV use that let visitors traverse the site to the extent that they would like. The Ellis River runs through the campgrounds, giving campers the chance to do recreational activities such as fly fishing, kayaking, and river rafting. The campground can be found a mile away to the south from the city of Andover, a small town that has some historical roots, such as the Andover Hook and Ladder Company Building.

While the campground is only open during the spring, summer, and fall, the owners have mentioned that they are interested in keeping the property open during all times of the year in the future. This would allow guests to come and stay during the winter months and give them easier access to several ski resorts and mountains in the area, so they can spend time doing more winter sports. One thing that tends to attract people to Lone Mountain River Front Campground is that it is far enough away from the city that there is no light pollution, so stargazing is one activity that can be done there.

History

Lone Mountain River Front Campground was initially established four years ago, back in 2017. Before the property had been founded, it was just farmland and a forested area. In 2017, Tom and Corie Learned decided to purchase the land. Tom and Corie have been in the lodging industry for a combined amount of about 40 years. The Learned Family has been in Andover for over six generations. Tom says this is what motivated him to purchase land in Andover and build a campground for that specific area.
