Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park

Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park

Located in Rockaway Beach, Oregon, Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park is presently under the ownership of Damien Laviolette. The property offers a total of five tent sites and eight RV sites that are available for visitors to occupy year-round. Owing to the establishment's location on the Nehalem River, crabbing, boating, and fishing serve as notable draws for tourism in the area. As the name of the RV park implies, a jetty and marina are both found on-site and are open for visitors to utilize for the previously mentioned activities. Guests also have the option of renting a boat from Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park as well as purchasing seafood.

About

Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park is located in the northwestern corner of Oregon, just off the Nehalem River. The establishment currently offers eight RV sites and five tent sites for visitors to occupy. Every RV site is a back-in space on a fairly grassy area, and they are all equipped with water and electric hookups. A picnic table and fire pit are additionally supplied at each tent and RV site. The manager of Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park, Josh, mentions that sites six, seven, and eight tend to be the most popular, due to their location on the river, as opposed to being on the bay. As the name of the establishment would suggest, a marina can be found on the property where visitors can rent boats or purchase crabs, clams, and oysters. The RV park also has an on-site store that sells beer, water, sunscreen, chips, ice cream, coffee, and small souvenir items. Some of the most notable aspects of Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park, according to Josh, are the boat rentals and the seafood that guests can buy.

A dock extends from the property into the Nehalem River. Near this dock, those who are staying at the RV park can lounge in a common area that contains a sizeable fire pit, which operates all day long. For those who are hoping to engage in some of the activities at or around the RV park, some of the most popular pastimes are crabbing and fishing off the jetty, according to Josh. Perch, chinook salmon, and coho salmon are some of the most common types of fish that can be caught. Josh notes that these fish often spawn near the bay, and there is a channel on the left-hand side of the river where a higher quantity of fish may be found.

The land that encompasses Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park is fairly wooded. Occupying approximately one acre, the property is part of the Oregon Coast Trail, as reported by Josh. The RV park is also found about two miles north of a small town called Rockaway. Concerning some of the attractions that people can visit during their stay, Josh says that the beaches near the establishment are often regarded as the main attraction in the area. Specific sites that Josh recommends guests visit include Haystack Rock, which can be found about a 45-minute drive away; Short Sand Beach, a reportedly popular spot for surfing; and the Cheese Factory in Tillamook. As for dining options, Josh suggests Offshore Grill and Coffee House, Riverside Fish & Chips, and Pirate's Cove in Garibaldi.

Culture

The manager of Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park, Josh, expresses that he and the owners want their guests to feel relaxed during their stay. "We're pretty mellow here," Josh remarks. He continues, "The Oregon Coast isn't really a high-stress area; we want people to enjoy themselves and have a good time." Because of the property's location in a wooded area along the Nehalem River, Josh believes this contributes to the relaxed atmosphere they hope to create at Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park. He also notes that he and the owners try to "get people involved with what's going on" at the property; for example, those who are staying at the RV park can pick out the oysters, hold the crabs, and drive the boats onto the river themselves. The owners' and managers' goal is to help people "feel like they belong." One former patron commented on their experience in a guest review, saying, "I was touring coastal Oregon and was psyched to have the opportunity to try crab fishing. The staff here was very helpful in getting us started. The guys even steamed our crab!"

Throughout the year, a few events and fundraisers for local charities are hosted by Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park. One such fundraiser pertains to the wildlife center near the property. The park also has a fundraiser for Rockaway Beach Lions Club that assists with providing kids glasses, eye exams, and hearing aids, among other medical devices. A particularly unique event that Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park hosts takes place on the first full weekend of June, where the owners and manager tag 26 crabs, take them to Nehalem Bay, and release them. Josh explains that if someone catches one of these tagged crabs, they can enter a raffle to win a sum of money that often reaches up to $2,000.

Policies are implemented at Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park that visitors are required to conform to over the course of their stay. One of the most important guidelines at the park is that everyone must wear shoes on the premises, as there may be fishing hooks or woodchips lying on the ground that may be hazardous. Pets are welcome to accompany guests at the RV park, provided that they are leashed at all times. Moreover, people should be aware that swimming on the property is not permitted because the dock is held by wire cables that could potentially cut someone. As for smoking, people are welcome to do so on the grounds as long as they smoke away from children. Lastly, quiet hours are enforced every night starting at 10:00 p.m.

Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park operates year-round, with the busiest time of operation most commonly occurring in August. While this month receives the highest quantity of visitors, Josh mentions that late September to early October "is like a continuous summer," as he reports that weather conditions are reasonably decent. Generally, the property has a diverse demographic of visitors, though Josh says that they primarily see people who are in the area to go crabbing. The park has also accommodated a fair amount of repeat guests.

History

Since 1978, Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park has been a family-owned business that started off as a marina with docks where they moored and rented boats. At the time, the property was a flat area with no designated sites, but people would still bring their RVs to stay there. Roughly 30 years ago, the jetty was built to facilitate crabbing and fishing. The current owner of Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park, Damien Laviolette, has had ownership over the establishment since 2018. However, the manager, Josh, has been working at the RV park since circa 2012. Josh was led to enter the lodging industry through a friend of his who formerly worked at Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park. Generally speaking, Josh was familiar with the area, as he had grown up there. Josh has found that one of his favorite parts of the job is "seeing guests return to the RV park."

One significant change that has been made to Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park is the reduction of campsites by nearly half of its total. Josh also notes that about eight years ago, they replaced the old dock with a new one with the intent to further ensure the safety of their visitors. For future plans, the owners want to add a gazebo and possibly remodel the restrooms. Josh says that overall, they hope to conduct "general improvements" to the property moving forward.
