JB Charleston Outdoor Recreation Center is located in Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina. Charleston has a fair amount of history and is known for being in the heart of where the Civil War started. The city offers a variety of things to do that many tourists tend to seek out and enjoy. JB Charleston Outdoor Recreation Center is also a short distance from several national parks and a few popular spots on the beach.

About

The Joint Base Charleston Family Campground is a military-based campground that is owned and run by the U.S. Airforce. The campground is unique because it is only accessible to patrols who have military access. This includes retired military members, DoD ID cardholders, 100% disabled veterans, and active-duty military members who are not working or based on Joint Base Charleston. The campground is only a place for recreation and is not meant for anyone looking for a long-term stay.

The campground has 43 RV sites and five tent sites, making a grand total of 48 available spots that are available during all times of the year. The busiest times of the year for the Charleston Family Campground tend to be the spring, summer, and fall months. The RV sites have power for 15, 30, and 50 AMP electricity, water, septic, and concrete pads. The check-in time is between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m., and the check-out time is at 11 a.m. The rate to stay on the campground generally runs about 23 dollars per night, though prices vary from unit to unit. For potential guests who would like to reserve a spot in advance, they do offer reservations over the phone; however, they can only book for the current month and the month after that. Anyone who comes without a reservation is still welcome, but if they are full upon arrival, then visitors will be placed in their overflow section, where there are still water/electric stations and restrooms nearby.

Guests have the option of spending their time walking and biking the trails around the property, playing on the basketball or tennis courts, or playing on two of the campground's playgrounds, among other things. Visitors can also take advantage of the gym, swimming pool, and climbing wall. There is a golf course across the street from the property and a grocery store that can be found nearby. Also right next to the property is the airstrip where the Airforce's planes and other flying vehicles land and take off.

Culture

JB Charleston Outdoor Recreation Center has a family-friendly environment in addition to its obvious military demographics, as it is only open to military families of both retired and active-duty personnel. The manager says that the goal is to create a hospitable place where guests can find relaxation and enjoyment during their stay. They aim to help guests feel like they are at a "home away from home" while visiting. One review a guest left regarding their stay stated, "Excellent place to stay. The camp hosts are very friendly and keep the facilities and campgrounds very clean."

The Outdoor Recreation Center has an assortment of activities for families to enjoy while on the property. Picnic areas and several spots by the pool are provided for guests to enjoy various gatherings, whether it be a birthday party or a family get-together. The JB Charleston Outdoor Recreation Center has many different kinds of equipment that can be rented out if customers would like. Among the rentable things, guests can borrow a number of sports equipment, like volleyball, softball, and golfing gear, boating equipment, including life vests and water suits, and camping equipment, such as ice chests, inflatable sleeping mats, and propane grills. There is an indoor climbing wall, as well as a frisbee golf course and an archery range.

The recreation center is not the only place with things to do; the surrounding area provides a wide assortment of activities as well. The city of Charleston is known for having several well-known beaches, a variety of museums, and a few golf courses. There are many restaurants in the vicinity for visitors to experience.

History

The JB Charleston Outdoor Recreation Center was built around 60 years ago, in the 1960s. The original owners of the land were the U.S. Airforce, and they still have ownership of the property today. Over the years, it has gone through a number of constructions where they have added features to the property to make it more welcoming and offer a better experience for those who stay here. The latest addition to the recreation center seems to have been the rock climbing wall that was built within the last few months.
