At Harbortown RV Resort, visitors can reserve one of the 248 RV sites or stay in one of the 2 cabins. The establishment is found in the city of Monroe in southeastern Michigan near the cities of Toledo and Detroit. While a fair amount of attractions can be found in these cities, the manager of the RV park, Heather, notes that Harbortown RV Resort can be considered a destination itself, as several on-site activities are available to patrons during their stay. Throughout the summer, themed events are held on the weekends, including Princesses and Pirates, Death By Chocolate, and Happy Campers Weekend. The most popular events that are hosted at the park are the six Halloween-themed weekends, which Heather says is one of the most unique elements of the property.
Located in the southeastern region of Michigan, Harbortown RV Resort is found near the shoreline of Lake Erie. The property offers 248 campsites and 2 cabins for visitors to occupy. Every campsite is equipped with water hookups, 30 amp electrical services, a concrete pad, a grassy area, a fire pit, and a picnic table. Nearly half of the spaces provide 50-amp capabilities as well as sewer and cable hookups. It should also be noted that a mix of pull-through and back-in sites are available. Every space is roughly 70 feet by 30 feet in size. According to Heather, the manager of Harbortown RV Resort, sites 101, 102, and 124 are the most popular because they are the most spacious and are closer to the bathrooms. "They're a little more private compared to the other sites," Heather explains.
With regard to the cabins and the amenities that they offer, both accommodations contain a full bath, kitchen, enclosed patio, living room area with a futon, and a bedroom with a queen-size bed. The cabins are two stories high, and the second level is described by Heather as a "loft area that is good for kids" due to the ceiling being slightly lower. While each cabin is set up to sleep two to four occupants, they can accommodate up to eight guests if necessary.
In addition to the cabins and RV sites, a wide range of activities are available on-site for those staying at the campground, including a playground, basketball court, volleyball court, disc golf, horseshoes, and a heated swimming pool. The pool hours of operation are from
9:00 a.m.-dusk, which is typically from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., depending
on the time of year. Beyond this, the owners of Harbortown RV Resort also own a go-karting site that neighbors the campground. The go-karting property is open to the general public, and it features an arcade, batting cages, and mini golf.
Furthermore, the RV park has a clubhouse with tables, chairs, a TV, and a kitchen area. Coin-operated laundry machines and a café are additionally found inside the clubhouse. The café is open on Fridays and Saturdays, primarily serving lunch and dinner meals, such as cheeseburgers and fries. Harbortown RV Resort has two different kinds of bathrooms in separate locations on the premises. In the words of Heather, the bathroom at the back of the park is designed as a "typical campground-style bathroom," while the bathroom in the clubhouse has private bathrooms with toilets and showers that are inside individual rooms rather than stalls. Inside the main office building, a campground store that sells toys, souvenirs, Harbortown hoodies, snacks, drinks, and candy is open for visitors to purchase items from. The office also offers free ball rentals for those who are interested in undertaking volleyball or basketball on the courts.
Heather describes the encompassing city of Monroe as a "quiet, historical town." Several history museums, former battlefields, and the William C. Sterling State Park contribute to the city's historical significance. The RV park is also found in fairly close proximity to Lake Erie, where visitors can engage in lake recreation. Heather mentions that Harbortown RV Resort is located among a few prominent cities, which are as follows: Toledo, Detroit, and Ann Arbor. Some of the attractions that Heather recommends guests visit in these cities are the Henry Ford Museum, the Toledo Zoo, and Memory Lane Drive-In Theatre. Numerous restaurants are also found in the property's vicinity. Some of the nearby dining options that Heather suggests are The Quarry, Mugsy's, and Michigan Bar & Grill.
The manager of Harbortown RV Resort, Heather, expresses that she and the owners want their guests to feel "happy and safe and to be able to camp in a clean environment." Heather shares her belief about how Harbortown RV Resort should make guests feel, as she remarks, "We want customers to leave here feeling good about their stay. That's an important quality in a campground." In an effort to help visitors feel safe and secure during their stay, nighttime security patrols the park. "We aim to be a family-oriented campground," Heather states. As such, Heather and the other staff members try to interact with people frequently to "make everyone feel like family when they're staying at Harbortown RV Resort." One patron who previously camped at the park commented in a review, saying, "Every one of the staff members we interacted with was incredibly lovely, and the bathrooms were clean."
On weekends during the summer, Harbortown RV Resort hosts events from Memorial Day to Labor Day. From May 19th to the 21st, the RV park holds an event called Happy Campers Weekend, which involves various crafts and activities. Heather says that one of her favorite events is Death By Chocolate, as the property sets up a chocolate slip-and-slide. Another notable event is called Princesses and Pirates Weekend, where the owners hire a local company of professionally dressed princesses who sing, dance, and play games with the kids. On Saturday nights, a DJ dance party is hosted, while on Friday nights, visitors can participate in karaoke. On occasion, Harbortown RV Resort arranges petting zoos, reptile shows, and magicians as well.
Heather reports that the most popular events that the park hosts are
the Halloween Weekends,, which takes place six weekends in September and October. This event is so popular that some visitors refer to Harbortown RV Resort as "the Halloween park," according to Heather. She explains that "all six weekends of the Halloween event are the same so that guests can have the same experience if they miss a weekend." This event features a bounce house, a haunted house, wagon rides, pumpkin painting, trick-or-treating, ventriloquism, a costume party for the kids, an adult costume contest, and a site decorating contest. The property also holds an activity during the Halloween event where the owners exhibit a giant pumpkin that people can guess the weight of, and whoever guesses the closest number to its actual weight wins a free overnight stay at Harbortown RV Resort.
As the owners of the park intend for their patrons to be safe and enjoy their stay, a few policies are enforced at Harbortown RV Resort to provide this experience to those who camp there. Concerning pets, they are welcome to come to the park, provided that they are supervised and leashed at all times. Pet owners are required to take responsibility for cleaning up after their pets. Guests should also be aware that the owners and manager "take pride in the grassy areas on the grounds," thus, visitors are informed of the guidelines that pertain to the upkeep of the grass upon check-in. It should be noted as well that quiet hours are implemented every night from 11:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Lastly, smoking is permitted in the campsites.
Harbortown RV Resort is open year-round for people to reserve an RV site or cabin. Heather says that the busiest season of operation most commonly occurs during the summer and when the Halloween-themed weekends take place. Generally speaking, the typical demographic that the park receives is primarily families, though Heather says that they also receive several elderly couples and cross-country travelers. Nearly 30-40% of their visitors are repeat guests, Heather mentions.
What is now presently known as Harbortown RV Resort "first began as a big, open space," according to Heather, the current manager of the park. The property was opened to the public as a campground about 24 years ago by the current and original owners of the business. Being a family-run establishment, the location of the campground was chosen by locals who were familiar with the city, as they had spent most of their lives in Monroe. The 248 RV sites and 2 cabins have been there since the campground first opened. After the owners purchased the acreage, they bought the adjacent go-karting site.
Heather's favorite part about being the manager of the RV park is "the people [she] work[s] with, especially the campers." She remarks, "We see people from all walks of life, and we have the opportunity to get to know them while they're here." Heather also enjoys the outdoor aspect of her job.
