Glen Ayr Resort

Glen Ayr Resort is comprised of a motel as well as an RV park that is located on the north side of Hoodsport, Washington. The resort has motel rooms, a couple of cottages, and over 30 RV spaces. The Hood Canal runs right by the property, where guests are able to walk down to the water's edge and spend time fishing, swimming, kayaking, and more. The property is found east of Olympia National Forest, which is less than an hour away. Glen Ayr Resort is a location where previous guests have celebrated things like family reunions, as well as weddings. The owner mentions that oysters and clams can be found on nearby beaches throughout the year.

About

Glen Ayr Resort has 14 motel rooms, two one-bedroom kitchenettes, a two-bedroom cottage, a two-bedroom townhouse, and 36 RV spots. In total, they have 54 different living arrangements that guests can choose from when making their reservations. The motel rooms come with either queen-sized beds or king-sized beds, depending on how much room the guest may want or need. Visitors have the capability to reserve a unit with either one bed or two beds, depending on how much room and space they would like. Regardless of which room in the motel guests reserve, each of the rooms comes with a small refrigerator, a microwave, a Keurig coffee maker, and a television. The rooms also come with a covered balcony that overlooks Hood Canal.

The Kitchenette rooms are larger than the motel rooms and are fully furnished. They each have a dining and living area, full bathrooms, and a full kitchen that is equipped with an ice maker, microwave, stove, oven, and coffee maker. The Kitchenettes also come with cable TV, which includes a DVD player, an electric fireplace, and a balcony that overlooks the rest of the property. The bedroom has two queen-sized beds. A sofa sleeper is located in the living room that allows for younger folk to sleep for the night. The maximum occupancy for the Kitchenettes is four adults and two children. Like a majority of the motel rooms, pets are not allowed inside these living spaces.

The Townhouse and The Cottage are two separate living arrangements that guests can rent. They both offer two different bedrooms, one full bathroom, one half-bathroom, a fireplace, a fully equipped kitchen with a freezer, ice maker, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, stovetop, and oven. The Cottage offers a more modern aesthetic, while the Townhouse has several rooms that provide a more rustic environment. They both can sleep up to six people at a time.

Beyond the different living arrangements that are offered at Glen Ayr Resort, there are also several places and things to do that are located on the property. A covered gazebo is available for guests, which can fit 14-20 people. Due to the fact that it is an enclosed gazebo, it is kept warm in the winter. During the summer, the windows are open to ventilate the gazebo and allow cool air into the space. The main building also has a clubhouse that is available for guests to use. The clubhouse has a big TV, tables, seating, and pool tables. While there isn't a store, they do sell a number of smaller and more essential things in the main building like toothpaste, candy, and more. Finally, there is also a spa house located on the property. The spa house has a large hot tub that can hold up to ten people at a time.

The property is nestled right on the edge of the Hoodsport Canal, which is one of the most popular locations for visitors to spend time doing water sports and recreational activities. The owner of the property, whose name is Lanette, explains that the nearby fjord has weather conditions that vary from calm and leisurely to windy and choppy. In the past, many previous patrons have brought kayaks and other smaller watercraft that they can take onto the fjord when the weather permits. For those that bring diving gear or rent some from one of the businesses in the towns, there are a number of popular locations to dive into Hood Canal and explore the bottom of the fjord.

There are a number of restaurants that can be located nearby. Model T Pub & Eatery is one location that Lanette suggests to guests looking for a place to eat out or get a drink. Another restaurant that she likes to note to visitors is El Puerto De Angeles, which serves Mexican cuisine as well as margaritas. Hoodsport Pizzeria is another recommended eatery in the Hoodsport.

There are several companies in the area that can provide guests with attractions. Skydiving is an optional activity with the business called Skydive Kapowsin, which is located south of the property in the city of Shelton. Beer and wine tasting is another activity that has a local presence. The Hardware Distillery is a specific place where guests can spend time trying different alcoholic beverages. Potlatch State Park is also found south, though not as far as Skydive Kapowsin. Potlatch State Park has a beach on the water's edge that allows guests to spend time in another location on the edge of Hood Canal.

Culture

Lanette, who is the owner of Glen Ayr Resort, explains that goals the resort staff have for the property include maintaining a good standard to the best of their ability. Lanette wants guests to feel welcome when they arrive. One thing she does to help carry that out is trying to get to know her guests and interacting with them, assuming they want to spend time talking as well. They enjoy seeing their visitors interacting with each other.

Glen Ayr Resort has several policies that they would like their guests to be aware of and abide by while they are staying at the motel or on the RV grounds. One of the more important rules to the establishment is that quiet hours are enforced from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM. Due to the fact that there are not any tent locations for outdoor camping, it is typically quieter in the evenings and during the later hours of the night. Another policy that must be upheld is that there is no smoking allowed in any of the indoor locations. Guests are able to smoke on the verandas and porches if they would like. Pets are not allowed in a majority of the rooms. However, visitors that would like to bring their pets can communicate with the staff and ensure they receive one of the two queen rooms that are pet-friendly. There is a $15 fee per pet that applies to each night the guests are staying at Glen Ayr Resort.
The property has received many reviews over the years. Many of the reviews that were left by previous guests mention the quality of care they were given by the staff and the quality of their stay. One person who recently stayed at Glen Ayr Resort writes, "The room and property were clean, nicely decorated, and well maintained. The staff was friendly and helpful. We had to change our date on fairly short notice, and the desk was very cooperative. We had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay." Another review from a guest who had spent time at the resort reads, "Very nice attention to details gave this resort an upscale feel, and everything was clean and fresh. Everyone was very friendly, professional, and skilled."

The culture of Hoodsport is mainly based around the Hood Canal. There are a large number of fishing locations that guests can take advantage of while they are spending time in the area. Hood Canal is most known for crabbing, and a logo of a crab tends to be a typical choice for companies in the area. According to the owner, the town is also known for other things, such as shrimp, oysters, seafood, mountains, hiking, waterfalls, and more. Diving is another popular activity that can be done in the area. One thing that is unique to the property is that they have a diving storage unit that is kept warm so that guests can store their diving equipment before and after spending time in the canal.

History

The main building and the two lodges have been around since the 1930s, though the specific year of their construction is unknown. When the property was first erected, it was mainly used as a camp for the fishermen who were catching fish during the peak seasons. Over the years, it has also been a gas station, and the main building served as a restaurant for a period of time.

Lanette and her husband have owned the Glen Ayr Resort for almost four years. They purchased the property back in 2018 and have been running the motel and RV park ever since. Lanette explains that the reason they bought the property was that they wanted an investment that would be able to keep them busy while she and her husband entered retirement. Once they found that this place was up for sale, they decided to make the purchase.

Ever since she took ownership of Glen Ayr Resort, Lanette has made a number of changes to the property in hopes of improving and upgrading the living spaces and grounds to help create a better environment for the visitors that spend time at the resort. Some of these changes include adding concrete to the pull-through RV sites, leveling the back-in RV sites, and upgrading in the form of other maintenance. She tries to stay up-to-date with the painting, and the staff attempts to ensure that the rooms and lots are clean when guests arrive for their stay.
