Flaming Arrow Campground has been owned and operated by Joni Ashton since she purchased the property in 2000. The establishment is situated in North Carolina's western region and currently offers 85 campsites for visitors to occupy. Outdoor recreational activities can be found on-site, and within the vicinity of Flaming Arrow Campground, as the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Nantahala National Forest encompass the campground. Additionally, several rivers course through the area, producing opportunities for white water rafting and kayaking. Joni encourages her patrons to explore these outdoor attractions by providing information on specific nearby sites that may pique the interest of her guests.
Located in the western region of North Carolina, Flaming Arrow Campground occupies 17 acres of land. A total of 85 campsites are available for guests to reserve, which are divided into three of the following classifications: 65 RV sites, 14 pop-up sites, and 6 tent sites. The RV sites supply visitors with full hookups—including water, sewer, electricity, and cable—while the pop-up sites exclusively offer water and electricity. As for the tent sites, occupants of these spaces can set up their tents underneath shelters that are stationed in each tent space in case of rainfall. Additionally, the tent sites offer water and electricity. It should be noted that all 85 sites are equipped with a picnic table and fire pit, and property-wide Wi-Fi is available to everyone throughout the duration of their stay as well. The campground is also characterized by paved roads that wind through the premises, which intend to facilitate access to the sites.
Aside from the campsites that can accommodate guests, the park contains a few facilities, namely a bathhouse with showers, a laundry facility with coin-operated machines, and a small on-site store. In the words of Joni Ashton—the owner of the establishment—the store sells "things that people may have forgotten" as well as "picnic and RV supplies," such as air mattresses, paper plates, condiments, bacon, hot dogs, eggs, juice, butter, and several other similar items. Moreover, Flaming Arrow Campground offers activities that people can engage in without having to leave the property. A swimming pool, playground, and open-air pavilion with ping pong are a few of these activities that guests can access during their stay. The campground also has a volleyball net, basketball court, cornhole, horseshoes, tetherball, and badminton. Equipment for these previously listed activities can be provided to campers by Flaming Arrow Campground.
Joni describes the land that encompasses the park as "wooded and mountainous," as the establishment neighbors the Great Smoky Mountains. She further explains, "Even though we're close to town, you don't feel like you're in a town. It feels like you're in the woods." Oftentimes, Joni gives her guests a map that indicates the location of 17 different waterfalls within the vicinity that tourists can visit on a day trip. She also notes that "five major rivers" are found in fairly close proximity to Flaming Arrow Campground, where people can go kayaking or white water rafting. Furthermore, nearly 30 miles of mountain biking trails can be found in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, according to Joni. Outdoor enthusiasts are often drawn to the area to undertake these previously listed recreational activities, along with hiking, tubing, and walking on the Appalachian Trail. Joni recommends her guests visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as well as Blue Ridge Parkway, the Cherokee Indian Reservation, and Harrah's Casino. For those who are searching for nearby places to eat, Joni suggests her patrons visit Granny's Kitchen, Peter's Pancakes, and Native Brews Tap and Grill.
Joni Ashton, the camp host of Flaming Arrow Campground, wants occupants to "feel like camping is fun." She also has the goal of helping them "feel safe" at the campground. With regard to the nearby attractions, Joni explains, "I want to help guests take full advantage of the Great Smoky Mountains while they're here." In an effort to arrange this experience for those who stay at the campground, Joni tries to "provide a concierge service for customers" by telling visitors about where they could spend their time during their trip. Joni also mentions that she wrote an informative outline called Off The Beaten Path that includes information about nearby places to go that people may not be able to find online.
With the aim to enhance each patron's stay at the campground, a few policies are implemented. Those who are hoping to bring their pet with them to Flaming Arrow Campground are welcome to do so, provided that their dog is leashed at all times and that the pet owner picks up after their dog. A quiet time is "strictly enforced" at the campground, as stated by Joni, and visitors are expected to keep noise to a minimum from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. every night. For the safety of others, patrons should also be acutely aware of the 10-mile-per-hour speed limit on the premises, due to the fact that kids may be riding their bikes, scooters, or skateboards around the park. Lastly, smoking is permitted at Flaming Arrow Campground.
The establishment is open year-round for people to reserve a site. Joni comments that the busiest season for the business is typically from May to October when school is not in session. She also says that the weather tends to be nicer during these months compared to other times of the year. During the summer, families account for the main demographic of those who stay at Flaming Arrow Campground; however, the property receives a few retirees during the winter. Joni remarks that nearly 40% of patrons are repeat guests.
In guest reviews, Joni observes that several people comment on how "clean and friendly" the property is. One former patron commented on these particular aspects, as they remarked, "I was super impressed with how clean the site was, including the bathrooms. The owner was so welcoming as we arrived." Joni makes an effort to interact with the occupants of each campsite frequently. Generally speaking, Joni says that she interacts with visitors most often during the check-in process.
Flaming Arrow Campground dates back to 1972, when the park was first constructed. It wasn't until the year 2000 that Joni Ashton, the current camp host, acquired ownership over the acreage. "I was a life-long camper who got to fulfill my dream and buy a campground," Joni remarks. Over the course of her ownership, Joni has come to find that her favorite part of the job is having the ability "to camp every day because [she] lives on the property." Joni adds that she is pleased with the fact that she was able to raise her children at the campground, and she "[wants] it to be a safe place for everyone else's kids" as well.
The campground has undergone a few updates throughout Joni Ashton's proprietorship. "Maintaining the infrastructure" and performing standard maintenance to the property have been the main updates to the park, according to Joni. General upkeep of the electrical and water systems has continually been maintained over the years. Joni affirms that there are "always improvements and always new things" in the works for Flaming Arrow Campground.
