About

Situated in central California just outside of the city of Lodi is the Flag City RV Resort. The resort is on 18 acres of land and is surrounded by farms, many of which are wineries or olive farms. In total, the property has 180 spaces that can be reserved by guests. Every site is paved and is equipped with full hookups, a picnic table, and can accommodate RVs requiring 20, 30, or 50 amps. Many of the spots are pull-through; however, there are some located in the center of the park near the dog run, which are back-in-only spaces. Dividing each space is a patch of lava rock with trees that provide some shade during the day. The resort organizes complimentary trash pickup from each RV site for every patron. For those who have pets, there is a three-acre dog run that is fenced in at the center of the resort. Surrounding the dog run is an array of solar panels, which provide the resort with 90 percent of its power.

The resort offers many different amenities to its guests. There are three facilities where laundry appliances and bathrooms are available. Cards that can be purchased at the main office are required for guests to utilize the laundry facility. A pool and a hot tub, which are open year-round, are located at the front of the property next to the main office. Seating is provided next to the pool. The main office has a convenience store connected to it that sells RV supplies, beer, and a selection of other small goods guests may need. A living room, an inside office, and library which includes a table for dining purposes are also featured inside the main office. Flag City RV Resort additionally includes a lounging area that is typically open for RV clubs rather than patrons. The area is known as the clubhouse, which has a large space with many tables and chairs, and two kitchens should space be needed. The clubhouse can be rented out by larger RV clubs and groups as an entertainment space, should they desire it. There is also seating next to the pool and inside the living room in the main office where there is a small library of books.

Culture

A unique aspect of the resort is its central location. Many of the guests who stay at the resort are passing through the area from southern California and going to the northern part of the state or vice versa. As such, many of the guests who visit the resort are returning guests, with a fair amount of them being older couples or families on their way to another destination. Bobette, one of the managers of the resort, also mentions that the resort sees a lot of weekend travelers from surrounding cities such as San Francisco or Sacramento.

In the region around Lodi, there are over 90 wineries that guests can visit for different tours and wine tastings. Those who stay at the Flag City RV Resort can try many of the nearby wineries that surround the city of Lodi. Local wines, as well as locally made olive oils, are sold at the resort’s convenience store. Those who wish to learn more about the wine culture can visit the Lodi Wine Visitor Center which explores the history of some of the oldest wineries in the area and is an additional location where guests can sample some of the region’s wine. Festivals and wine events that offer wine and chocolate tend to be a draw to people in the area.

The San Joaquin County Historical Museum, south of Lodi, provides insight into Lodi’s farming generally with indoor and outdoor exhibits detailing the native people and the growth of agriculture around the city. Lodi also offers other attractions aside from wine and agriculture. For those looking for more family-friendly entertainment, the World of Wonders Science Museum offers many different activities and exhibits that aim to teach children more about science. Lodi has many different parks throughout the city that guests can visit, one of the most notable being Lodi Lake, which has beach access and kayak rentals available to take on the lake and to the Mokelumne River that runs through the city.

Flag City is open year-round, with its busiest months occurring during the spring and fall seasons. Throughout the year, the park will host a monthly activity for the people who stay there, such as hosting their own wine or beer tasting events. There are a variety of festivals that occur in the area that are large draws for people. One such festival is the Lodi Grape Festival, an annual event that celebrates the grape harvest and takes place at the Lodi Grape Festival Grounds in the northern part of Lodi. The grounds will also host other events, such as the Golden State Pinball Festival and American Kennel Club sanctioned dog shows.

Bobette says that she wants guests to feel like the resort is a home away from home. The park’s motto is "you bring your house and we’ll provide the resort." As such, the park has some policies that it asks guests to observe when they stay there, one of the most important being that there is no tent camping of any kind allowed on the premises. Smoking is permitted but must be done outside of the main resort buildings. Pets are allowed to stay at the park and are free to be let off the leash inside of the dog run; however, owners must clean up after their pets.

Reviews of the resort left by past patrons mention many aspects of their stay that they found positive. These reviews most often include references to the hospitality of the staff, close proximity to local wineries, and the cleanliness of the property. “The sites are concrete and level, and all roads in the resort are paved. Very easy access in and out, close to highway and truck stops for fuel. It has a nice pool and store with several laundry rooms,” one guest who stayed at the resort recalled.

History

The Flag City RV Resort was established in 2006. The original owners ran the property for five years before selling it to the park’s current owner who bought the property in 2011. He had owned a variety of businesses, including a vineyard of his own, and bought the resort for what he considered to be a good deal. After he purchased the property, he made many updates to improve the property, such as having each RV space paved and setting up the solar array that provides the property with most of its power. When talking about plans for the future, Bobette, one of the managers of the park, says that the park has many plans in motion for continued additions and upgrades. She says that soon a bar and a restaurant will be added to the main office building that will provide an additional gathering space for guests.
