About

The Double Adobe Campground is located in McNeal, Arizona, near Bisbee. The establishment has a shooting range adjacent to the campground, called Shotgun Sports. There are 108 RV sites on the grounds and an area for tent camping. The RV spots have full hookups with 30 and 50 amp accessibility. The grounds of the property feature grassy areas where those seeking tent accommodations can stay, as well as trees throughout the premises that can offer shade at some of the RV sites. Other amenities found at the campground include men's and women's restrooms that have three showers each and a laundry facility that has six washers and six dryers. The showers are free for patrons to use, and the laundry machines are all coin-operated. The property also has a clubhouse available for use. Inside the clubhouse is a game room and television with a selection of DVDs. The clubhouse can be reserved but is also available throughout the day. There is not a store on-site; however, laundry soaps and fabric softeners are available for purchase if needed.

Another feature of note on the grounds of the property is Shotgun Sports, which is a shooting range. At the shooting range, guests can participate in clay shooting, trapshooting, skeet shooting, and other sporting activities of a similar nature. Occasionally, there are also registered ATA shooting events held on the grounds. The shooting area is open to the public, and many locals in the area use the range to practice their shooting, according to the owner. Those who want to shoot need to bring their own guns as the property does not have any available to be rented. The business is open to both those by themselves wanting to shoot as well as groups who want to reserve the range for various events.

The area surrounding the Double Adobe Campground and Shotgun Sports is home to a variety of mountains and desert landscaping. The property sits in Sulfer Springs Valley, which has many mountains nearby, with the elevation at the establishment being approximately 4,200 feet. Nearby cities include Bisbee, Douglass, Tombstone, and Sierra Vista. Close to the grounds are multiple activities that can be enjoyed by various groups and ages of patrons of the establishment. Hiking can be a popular activity in the mountains that surround the town, and there are multiple museums in the surrounding cities.

Culture

At the Double Adobe Campground and Shotgun Sports, the owners hope to help guests feel comfortable and as if they were "part of the family," according to Roy, one of the owners. Roy and the staff at the property want to treat those who stay with them with respect by striving to follow the "treat others as you would want to be treated" mentality. In an attempt to create a friendly and family-oriented environment, Roy and Norma, the other owner of the property, try to greet those who come to the park and check in on them. Roy says that either he or Norma will take a walk around the property every day to make sure that patrons are comfortable and have the things they need. They hope to create an environment where those who stay at the establishment feel comfortable and want to return.

The business has a portion of its visitors that return multiple years in a row. Many who stay at the establishment comment on the hospitality of the staff and the array of wildlife that can be found on the grounds. Some of the animals that can be seen at the campground include deer, quail, and javelina; multiple species of birds can be seen from the property, and birdwatching can be a popular activity in the area. One visitor said, "Helpful owners who work hard to maintain the campground. The campground is well-maintained and clean. Also, it is quiet; we know there is a shooting range nearby but rarely hear any noise that would bother us."

According to Roy, some of the unique features of the Double Adobe Campground are the wildlife that passes through the property and the sunsets that are often seen at the property. The business is reportedly in a more secluded area on the outskirts of McNeal, Arizona, and as such, there are not many buildings obstructing views of the sky during sunset hours. The campground and shooting range is open year-round, and Roy reports that the busiest time of year for the campground is from October through April due to the cooler temperatures at that time. According to Roy, many of the visitors to the premises are retired people who "snowbird,'" meaning they come to the area for the warmer climate during the winter months before returning to their homes when it gets into the "warm season."

While staying at the Double Adobe Campground and Shotgun Sports, the owners have policies in place that guests are expected to adhere to. The business is pet-friendly, though pets must be kept on leashes at all times and cleaned up after. Additionally, there is an enforced quiet time for patrons from 10:00 PM until 8:00 AM daily.

In the surrounding area, there are multiple activities that can appeal to a variety of ages of guests. Bisbee, Arizona, is located near the establishment and was once a mining town. Today, the town has a variety of museums and activities surrounding the history that guests can take part in. Every year, the town puts on an event called the "Bisbee 1,000," which is a stair climbing race over the mountains in the area. Additionally, Tombstone is another city nearby that can be enjoyed by visitors. Styled as an old western settlement, there are multiple places that can be visited by patrons. Other areas of note include the Coronado National Forest, which has hiking trails, the White Water Draw, the Chiricahua Mountains, and Ramsey Canyon. Some eateries in the area that Roy would recommend include Gus's Pizza, Jimmy's Hot Dogs, the Gaston Hotel Inn, and Contessa's.

History

Norma and Roy, the owners of the Double Adobe Campground and Shotgun Sports, have owned the business since 2007. For the 25 years leading up to the purchase of the campground, Roy worked in the retail industry. After years in retail, he decided he wanted to change things up. He said that he wanted to "try to control [his] destiny and [his] future" by being his own boss and doing something that he loved. He and his wife purchased the RV park because they "wanted to do something that didn't feel like work" but could still be something that they loved. Over the past 16 years of owning and operating the park, the couple has made multiple changes to the establishment. They have updated all of the RV spaces and added the sporting complex to the shooting range. When they originally purchased the property, there was only trap shooting on the premises, but they have upgraded the complex to include more types of shooting opportunities.

In the future, the couple hopes to keep the business operating and open for those who are looking for a place to stay in southern Arizona. They continue to do regular maintenance to the RV sites and upgrade them with the hopes of continuing to improve their guest's experience. They want to provide an experience for those who stay at the park, giving them the opportunity to stay on the grounds as well as shoot at the range.
