Cottages Uptown

The Cottages in Eureka Springs is a multi-unit business of various cottages. These properties are all owned or managed by Joe Greene and his wife, Melissa, who are local community members. There are six cottages in total, each with distinct names, layout, building styles, and decorations. As the name of the conglomerate suggests, the properties are all located in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The lodging style of the cottages is meant to serve as a place where visitors can have a private, independent, and comfortable stay. Nearby attractions include anything from outdoor activities, such as hiking and biking, to spending a night in the town shopping or dining.

About

The Cottages in Eureka Springs have a total of six separate cottages. These six cottages are spread throughout the city, primarily located in different residential areas. Not much can be said that would adequately apply to all six houses, considering their many differences. Each one is located somewhere within the city limits of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, has a full kitchen, and offers complete privacy. Beyond those three simple facts, speaking of the different houses individually more efficiently shows what features and amenities are provided.

The "Cottage Downtown" is located at 17 First Street, accommodates up to four people, and comes equipped with Wi-Fi, a double jacuzzi, cable television, and a fireplace. The decorating motifs are generally red or yellow, giving the Cottage Downtown a warm ambiance.

The Starry Night Cottage is a Victorian-style, two-story house on 180 Spring Street. It is located within walking distance to downtown Eureka Springs and is considered part of the "historic district" of the city. The owners describe the décor of Starry Night Cottage as "charming" and "whimsical," and the house can accommodate up to four people.

The Sunflower Cottage also houses four guests and sits at 19 First Street. As its name suggests, the cottage's primary decoration color is yellow, accented with multiple arts and crafts depicting sunflowers. The cottage has a wrap-around porch, jacuzzi bath, off-street parking, and a notably modern kitchen.

The Bodie House Cottage is managed a little differently from the other properties, and information about its policies and special conditions can be found at VRBO.

The Cottage Uptown (not to be mistaken with Cottage Downtown) is the only one-bedroom house that Cottages in Eureka Springs offers, providing room for only two guests at a time. Also unique to the cottage is the fact that it is pet-friendly (owners must be informed ahead of time). It comes with off-street parking, cable television, a covered porch, and a location in the historic district of Eureka Springs.

Finally, the Chateau Cottage is more spacious than the other cottages, sitting on 1800 square feet at 119 N Main Street. Its central location makes it possible to avoid cars altogether. The cottage comes equipped with a gourmet kitchen, large screen television, porches with a brook flowing underneath, and vintage decorations. The Chateau Cottage can house up to six people comfortably.

Culture

The desired culture at the Cottages in Eureka Springs is that of relaxation and seclusion. The private nature of the cottages virtually ensures that guests will be able to go their entire trips without interacting with the management of the properties, save perhaps for checking in and out. In fact, Joe Greene—one of the owners of the Cottages in Eureka Springs—states that he personally hopes that no one will have to interact with him more than necessary. Though personable and amiable, Joe understands the power of a secluded vacation, viewing the experience more as a "getaway" than anything else.

Because the properties are located at varying locations, it is entirely up to the guests which cottage they would prefer to reserve. They may make this choice according to pricing, accommodations, amenities, or personal preferences. However, that same distance means that each cabin will have easier access to some activities than others.

In general, the city of Eureka Springs is known for its historic sites and outdoor activities. Biking, hiking, shopping, and dining are prime examples of available attractions in the area. Joe describes Eureka Springs as "a hole in the Bible belt," sticking out compared to nearby cities, which are traditionally more God-fearing and gospel-oriented. "It's a mini Las Vegas in 'redneck country,'" Joe explains. The owners desire, above all else, that people are able to enjoy the town.

The Cottages in Eureka Springs are open year-round though there is a peak in occupancy in the fall months. Regardless of the season, or perhaps because of it, visitors come to the cottages for many reasons. An abundance of the guests who have stayed at any of the properties express a "desire to return," says Joe. One guest staying in the Chateau Cottage commented, "This place is a hidden treasure. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a place to stay where they can relax and still be close to everything. One night I sat out on the porch after the business of the city day was over. All I could hear were the crickets and the gently flowing creek that runs right below the wood slats of the porch that runs across the whole front of the building. I hope this place is around for many more visits."

History

Owing to the fact that the Cottages in Eureka Springs consist of multiple separate properties, the histories of each building differ slightly. Additionally, admittedly not much is known about the various historical accounts of each cottage. Most of the properties, however, are nearly 120 years old. For example, the Cottage Downtown was first constructed in 1901 and the Starry Night Cottage and the Cottage Uptown are even older—both were built in the 1800s. The newest addition to Cottages in Eureka Springs, the Cottage Uptown, was initially built and used as a schoolhouse.

Joe and Melissa Greene are the owners of four of the cottages that make up the Cottages in Eureka Springs. They are managers of the other two, though ownership falls under other individuals. Joe and Melissa have been in the Eureka Springs area for around 20 years. They initially started in the region by working at restaurants and cleaning buildings. So when the opportunity presented itself to buy properties of their own, they jumped at the idea. "We could keep cleaning as we'd already been doing but get paid more for it," Joe explains. Since then, they have remained active community members. Melissa is even a member of the Historical Preservation Society.
