Big River RV Park

The Big River RV Park is located in Big River, California. There are a total of 170 units that can be reserved along with four park models. Each RV site has full 30 and 50 amp hookups with some of the spaces being back-in only and some being pull-through. There is grass between each space and throughout the park, which Laurie, one of the park’s managers, says is a feature that is unique to only this property in the area. The park models are equipped with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and a small living area. Many people visit the town to float on the Colorado River, on which the park is located. The RV park has a boat launch people can use to launch their watercraft and a beach area that is available for day use by both guests and the public in the region.

About

On the banks of the Colorado River in southern California is the Big River RV Park. The park has a total of 170 sites that guests can rent, with 166 of those sites being RV spaces and the remaining four being park models. Each of the RV spaces have full 30 and 50 amp hookups as well as a picnic table and grass between each unit. Laurie, a manager of the park, says that the grass is what sets the property apart from other RV parks in the area that often use gravel to fill in the space between RV spots. The spaces also alternate with the number of pull-through spots and the number of back-in spots, being pretty evenly split. Visitors to the park can also choose to stay in one of the four park models that are on the premises. Each of these models is equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and small living area.

There is a main office on the property that guests are asked to check in at upon their arrival. Inside of the main office is a store that sells various items that patrons might need or want such as RV supplies and snacks. The main office building also houses the park’s recreation area that has tables and chairs where guests can gather to socialize. This rec room is where a majority of the events that the park hosts are held. The events vary based on the time of year, such as seasonally themed dinners and craft classes, chili cook-offs, and potluck dinners to name a few. Also found in the rec room is a take-a-book-leave-a-book library that guests can use. Behind the main office is a gym with treadmills and other standard exercise equipment that visitors staying at the property can use at their leisure.

Outside and around the grounds, guests will find more grass areas with trees that can provide shade during the summer months. Visitors who bring dogs can take them to either a small or large dog park where they can let the dogs off their leashes. There is also a boat ramp where patrons can launch a boat or other watercraft to float on the Colorado River. Near the boat ramp is beach access and floating docks for those who wish to enjoy the river’s shoreline.

Culture

Many people who visit the Big River area often visit for its access to the Colorado River. A popular activity that visitors can do is float down the river in a boat. The boats can either be personal vessels or they can be rented in town. During the summer, some people will bring speedboats and hold shows on the river that guests can enjoy. Big River RV Park provides public access for people to launch their boats using the boat launch. The park has a beach that is open to the public as well as designated day-use areas where people can enjoy the river.

There are other outdoor activities that guests can participate in around the area while they stay at the park. The property is an hour and a half away from Joshua Tree National Park where patrons can go on hikes and observe the Joshua Trees that the national park is named after. Closer to the RV park is Swansea Ghost Town and Copper Mine, which is an abandoned mining town that is open to the public and has additional hiking trails that guests can explore. For those who bring off-road vehicles, there are trails nearby where those can be driven. One notable off-road drive leads to the Nellie E. Saloon, a desert bar that is in the nearby mountains. While there, visitors can enjoy a variety of food and drinks and can listen to live music should they visit on a weekend.

A variety of positive reviews of the Big River RV park have been left by previous patrons. Many of them mention the grass and trees that come with each RV space and the close proximity to the Colorado River. One guest said of their stay, “the river is beautiful and the beach is like a grass park. The birds and ducks are fun to watch. The guests and staff are friendly. Laundry is provided with washers and dryers and a clothesline if you wish.” Many of the reviews left about the property are reflective of the goals that the park has for its patrons. Laurie, one of the managers of the park, says that she wants guests to feel comfortable and at home during their stay. Her and her staff strive to create this atmosphere by offering free coffee and water to visitors staying at the park and having a gate surrounding the park in hopes to further help guests feel safe.

The park has some policies that it asks patrons to follow over the course of their stay. These policies are designed to help retain the quiet and peaceful atmosphere the staff at the park hopes to uphold. The most important policies include observing a quiet time starting at 10:00 PM every night. Two pets are allowed per site, but they must be kept on a leash at all times aside from when they are in one of the two dog parks. No pets are allowed in the park models. There is also an extra charge for any additional vehicles that guests may bring.

History

The Big River RV Park has been in operation for over 30 years. It was bought two years ago by its current owner, Allan Thomas. Allan used to work in the construction industry building homes, but decided to switch over to owning and running RV parks. Since purchasing Big River RV Park, grass has been added between each space and a couple of dog parks were installed for guests to use. Various upgrades have also been made to the main office and the rec room. Laurie, one of the managers of the property, says that they have additional plans to continue to add to the rec room and to offer other new events for patrons at the property.
