The Big Pine Campground is located just outside of Custer, South Dakota. Placed deep in a wooded area of the dense forest near Custer, the campground is surrounded by large pines and oak trees. Dirt roads run throughout the campground, and well-established paths lead to and from each campsite. Custer is considered one of the oldest towns in South Dakota and has a long history of gold mining in the area. Herds of buffalo can often be seen near the park. There are many famous parks and museums near the Big Pine Campground, including Mount Rushmore and Wind Cave National Park.
Big Pine Campground is placed on seventeen acres of forest-covered land and has a variety of different site options to offer to their guests. There are RV sites, primitive sites, tent sites, a retro trailer rental, and cabin rentals. Each site contains some amount of shade and is and secluded away from traffic and most noises of the city. The RV sites come with a fifty or thirty amp option for electricity, as well as water and sewer amenities. A dump station is located in the corner of the property that guests are welcome to use at the end of each stay.
The primitive sites are nestled deep in the woods and have a short path to walk in order to reach each. The retro trailer sleeps three people and has the basic amenities that most RV's have, including a small kitchen, bathroom, and refrigerator. A few small cabin rentals are located on the Big Pine Campground. The cabins have two full-size beds with a small dining area. Every site on the Big Pine Campground has a fire pit and picnic table for each guest to use. Wood is not inherently provided in the units, but is sold at the property store. The tent sites throughout the property have a place to park your vehicle and a clearing large enough for two medium-sized tents.
All visitors at the Big Pine Campground can use the bathhouses located on the property. The bathhouse offers hot showers, restrooms, mirrors, counter space, and large sinks. Laundry services are also offered with four coin-operated machines in the properties clubhouse. A game room is located on the property where visitors can play video games, borrow board games and movies. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the whole property. A small store is located on the property where visitors can purchase ice, firewood, RV supplies, and other camping necessities. Pets are welcome on the property as long as they are contained. They are not allowed in the rental trailer or cabins.
A large draw to the Big Pine Campground is its location in the woods just outside of Custer, South Dakota. On the property, visitors can play horseshoes, explore the nature paths throughout the area, and play games of volleyball or badminton on the public netted courts. A small children's playground is also located on the property. The iconic American monument of Mount Rushmore is a twenty-minute drive from the Big Pine Campground. The campground backs up to Custer State Park, and Bear Country USA is not far from the property.
The owners of the Big Pine Campground are pleased with the property they have created. One of the core ideas behind the campground was to provide a place where guests can enjoy a private outdoor escape. To create and enforce this relaxed atmosphere for guests, "Quiet Time" is enforced from 10 pm to 8 am. The owners of the Big Pine Campground ask all guests to be respectful of others and to keep the noise down during these times.
Another goal of the campground is to treat customers in such a way that they have desires to keep coming back. Generally speaking, most of those who visit the Big Pine Campground are return guests. Guests have expressed their opinions on the cleanliness of the campground, the demeanor of the staff, and the nature surrounding the campground.
Though the Big Pine Campground has a culture that promotes relaxation, there are still many activities to do directly on the campground for families and smaller groups. There is a game room with video games, as well as exterior features such as fire pits, a playground, horseshoes, volleyball nets, and hiking trails.
The city of Custer has extensive history regarding early American events. The city started out as a boomer town for gold miners but soon developed into a flourishing community. The nearby Mount Rushmore and Wind Cave National Parks bring lots of tourists to the Custer area. There are also many herds of buffalo who are native to the area that visitors can see while driving along Wild Life Loop Road.
Jennifer Lynch and her husband are the current owners of the Big Pine Campground. They have been owners of the property since 2018. They are the sixth owners of the property. The land has functioned as a campground for over forty years. The campground and area around Custer, South Dakota, are known for not only their physical attractions with dense forests and tall mountains but also the history in the city that was established in the mid-1800s.
