Avery's

Avery's, an RV park, occupies four acres of land in eastern Arizona. A gas station, BBQ restaurant, convenience store, and bar are all on-site and are not exclusive to RV park guests. Liz and her husband Lance have been managing the business since 2013, continuously striving to update the property and putting forth the effort to provide guests with a positive experience. The RV campground is located about a quarter of a mile from a nature walk that visitors can utilize. A fair amount of outdoor recreational activities, namely hiking, fly fishing, or swimming, are examples of nearby attractions. Guests are also given the option to engage in on-site activities such as cornhole or ladder ball without having to leave the property. One particularly unique aspect of the establishment's location is that, according to Liz, the area is "the largest stand of ponderosa pine trees in the world."

About

Located in the eastern region of Arizona, Avery's features 33 sites for guests to rent. The four acres that the property is situated on contain a convenience store, bar, an on-site gas station, and a BBQ restaurant. Inside the convenience store is the main office, where guests check in and check out. Liz, the owner, explains that "typical gas station items" are sold in the store, including snacks, candy, drinks, chips, beer, wine, and tobacco products, as well as propane. The bar includes three pool tables, a foosball table, darts, and a jukebox, all of which are available to guests during their stay. Those who stay at the property can participate in on-site activities without having to search beyond the borders of the premises for things to do. Yard games such as life-size Jenga, ladder ball, and cornhole are a few provided activities.

Each site is either 30, 50, or 110 amp with water, sewage, and trash available as well. Patrons also have access to property-wide Wi-Fi. Lawn areas and gravel driveways are in each of the spaces. Several trees can be found throughout the campground, providing shade in a fair amount of the sites. Additionally, restrooms and showers are located in separate buildings on the grounds. When booking the sites, visitors can choose to stay short-term or long-term as every site is suitable for either one. It should be noted that two of the spaces are pull-through.

Liz, the owner of Avery's, recommends guests visit Casa Malpais Archaeological Park and Museum during their stay. Other attractions such as biking, swimming, hiking, and fly fishing can also be found in close proximity to the RV park. Located about twenty minutes from the property is a downhill ski area that offers snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. This particular area tends to be relatively popular during the winter season. Avery's is also situated in close proximity to Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, one of the nearby places where hiking trails are most abundant. For those who are searching for places to eat, Liz would first recommend the on-site restaurant offered at Avery's, followed by Trailriders Restaurant. Booga Red's Restaurant and Safire Restaurant are other nearby options that Liz occasionally directs visitors to.

Culture

Events that are not exclusive to RV park guests are hosted often at Avery's restaurant and bar. One specific event is known as the Arizona Cattle Growers Convention and is hosted annually. On Thursdays and Saturdays Liz and her husband, the owners, host karaoke in the bar, and on Fridays, they have dance lessons available to visitors. The dance lessons have no additional fee and they teach eight different styles of country dancing. Typically, the lessons are hosted in the bar.

A few policies are implemented at Avery's that patrons are expected to act in accordance with. Liz explains that "conventional pets" are allowed to stay on the premises. Other policies entail quiet hours from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM. Lastly, a 5 mph speed limit is enforced while driving through the property.

Liz and her husband, Lance, have the goal of providing guests with an experience that allows them to feel "like they're at a home away from home," as stated by Liz. In an attempt to emulate this atmosphere, Liz and Lance try to make themselves available for any questions, concerns, or needs that their guests may potentially have. They put forth the effort to interact with patrons often. Several reviews of previous guests mention the environment, the hosts, and the hospitality; however, the majority of reviews comment on the restaurant at Avery's. One visitor remarked, "The people are nice and the food is fantastic and worth the drive from wherever you are. Brisket and pork just melt in your mouth." The bar and restaurant are open every day except for Sundays and Mondays. The bar, in particular, opens at 4:00 PM; on Saturdays, it opens at 2:00 PM, closing whenever the last guest leaves, otherwise until 2:00 AM.

Avery's is open year-round, with the busiest season generally lasting from the beginning of April to the end of October. The main demographic of those who visit Avery's is overall a mix of individuals, ranging from families to older folks to workers who are temporarily employed nearby. A considerable number of repeat guests come as well. Many people visit from Phoenix to avoid the higher temperatures. According to Liz, temperatures do not exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit in the area where Avery's is located.

History

Since 2013, Liz Avery has owned and operated the business with the help of her husband, Lance Avery, and her father-in-law, John Avery. The property was originally built in 1978 and was introduced as Little River Lounge. Before Lance and Liz gained ownership, the establishment was known as Main Street Station.

Liz and Lance were originally in search of a restaurant that they could manage. They were drawn to the restaurant that is currently found on the grounds of Avery's, and they ended up purchasing the entire acreage that additionally included the RV campground, gas station, and convenience store. A fair amount of renovations have taken place since Liz and Lance first began managing the property. They have planted nearly 60 trees, established the lawn areas, ridden the park of trash and abandoned units, and remodeled the interior and exterior of the existing buildings. The initial changes took about ten months, but the overall process of updates has been a continuous and gradual development. Regarding future plans, the owners hope to add more trees, keep up with standard maintenance, and carry out more landscaping work. Liz and Lance are content with the number of amenities that they currently offer, meaning that guests do not have to leave the property to purchase items such as propane or food.
