The Arizona Sun RV Park is located in Quartzsite, Arizona. It has a total of 134 RV sites, all of which are full 30 or 50 amp hookups. There is a main office building that also houses many of the other facilities on the property, such as coin-operated laundry machines and a clubhouse area where guests can gather and socialize. Weekly activities are held in this space for patrons at the park and the general public. A monthly yard sale is also held where the park provides breakfast at a small fee for those who participate. Barbara, the park manager, says that she wants “guests to feel a part of us” during their stay. The staff strives to help patrons with their needs and is happy to recommend things to do in the area. Many guests often visit the region to explore the nearby mines for unique rocks and minerals.
Situated in the town of Quartzsite, Arizona, is the Arizona Sun RV Park. The property sits on three acres of land and has 134 sites that guests can reserve. Eight of those sites are dedicated pull-through RV spaces with the ability for other spaces to do the same, provided that the space in front of that spot is open. All of the sites have full 30 and 50 amp hookups. The area next to where the RV is parked is large enough for visitors to set up any chairs and firepits that they may bring with them.
Those who are visiting the property may find that the RV park has a main office where guests can check-in upon arrival. The bathroom and shower facilities, a laundry room with coin-operated machines, and the clubhouse area are also within that building. This clubhouse is where most of the gatherings at the park take place and where the park holds various events and activities. Every evening the clubhouse hosts a game night where guests can enjoy a variety of games and watch sporting events on the TV in the room. On Tuesday nights, a bingo night is hosted instead of the typical game night that is open to the public. There are occasional potlucks and tournaments for different games and activities at other times during the week.
A unique aspect of the Arizona Sun RV Park is that the property hosts yard sales that are held monthly, typically on the second Saturday. Barbara, one of the managers, makes breakfast at a small fee for those who attend. She says that she likes to make something different every month, cooking breakfast items such as breakfast burritos, hotcakes, biscuits and gravy, and so on.
There are a variety of activities in the region that have been popular with guests who have stayed at the RV park. According to Barbara, one of the park’s managers, a large portion of guests will stay at the RV park for various meets and shows related the area’s mining history. Some patrons have traveled from across the country or from other countries to show off the rocks they have collected and to observe other people’s rock collections in an annual "pow-wow" event near the property. There are multiple mine shafts relatively close to the park for those who don’t have rocks but are interested in mining and its history in the area. While the actual mine shafts are closed, Barbara says that many people explore and metal detect the region to search for potentially unique rocks, with some people occasionally finding gold.
When talking about how she wants visitors to feel when they stay at the park, Barbara says she “wants guests to feel like they are a part of us.” Many of the patrons who visit the park have been going there for years. Typically, the busiest season for the property is in January. That is when the area hosts its annual "pow-wow" and an RV show, which takes place in a tent "the size of three football fields," according to Barbara, visitors often attend. According to Barbara, most of those guests are elderly couples, with some occasional families staying at the park throughout the year.
Many guests who have stayed at the Arizona Sun RV Park have left positive reviews of the property. Frequently, these people highlight the cleanliness of the park and the helpfulness of the staff. One guest commented, “We stayed for a week and were really impressed by the size of the RV sites and the clean bathrooms and the clean laundry room.” Other patrons have said that “the staff provides informative information to all area site-seeing in the local area” of Quartzsite, for those who wish to explore the region.
Barbara attributes the success of the RV park to a variety of factors, the most prominent being the goal that the staff has to ensure that all of the guests’ needs are met. To accomplish this, the hosts drive around in golf carts every few hours to check in with patrons and assist them with any needs they may have. Barbara walks around the park each day and will interact with guests at their sites and at the events that are held throughout the week. Being able to meet all kinds of people and talk to them about their interests is one of Barbara’s favorite parts of her job.
The Arizona Sun RV Park was originally established in 2000 by Mary and Jerry Vandever. Jerry bought the park because he wanted to build the property up and manage it with his wife and his family. They also purchased the land next to the RV park and built a gated mobile home community, the added land was eventually sold to individual owners for each lot. The Vandevers gave the RV park to their son after running it for a number of years, and after running it himself for a time, the son sold the property to a company based out of Boston. The current owner, Jack Stuart, bought the property in November of 2020. Since purchasing the property, Jack has worked with his staff to clean up the premises, repaint the main building, and make additional improvements in an effort to improve the experience of their patrons.
Something that guests have frequently noticed when exploring the town of Quartzsite is a high number of camel-themed attractions. This is because the military used the town at one point to train soldiers and camels to operate in similar environments. As such, visitors can find a variety of camel-themed murals around the city and, depending on the time of year, can also view Quartzsite’s annual camel parade. A museum dedicated to the specific history of camels in the area also details this history for those who are interested in learning more about it.
